American Idol Contestant Singing the Prison Blues Again
Jessica Sierra just can’t seem to get her act together after her nearly successful run on American Idol. She’s been stalked repeatedly and has now had two separate brushes with the law, the last of which is threatening to slap her with eleven years in prison.
Sierra had the bad luck of being on American Idol during the same season as Grammy winner Carrie Underwood. Simon Cowell praised Sierra and put her and Underwood in the same league. They both sang in the country genre and were both blonde. The difference between the two being that Underwood had a nice, easy tone, while Sierra’s voice was uniquely husky. Despite Cowell’s comparison, Underwood was the easy favorite, while Sierra was voted out in tenth place, good enough to get her on the tour.
Life wasn’t exactly idyllic for Sierra, a Florida native after her time on American Idol. The first issue to crop up that forced her into the news was some unwanted attention from a stalker she acquired. A 59-year-old man would call and leave angry messages on Sierra’s answering machine. When that didn’t get him the attention he was looking for from Sierra, he landed on her grandmother’s doorstep. After his arrest, it was declared he was incompetent to stand trial, and he was sent back where he came from, California, for outpatient treatment. The calls started up again a year later, but this time in Nashville, and he was arrested once again.
Sierra’s professional singing career seemed to be going well, despite not being overly successful. She was sent to Iraq on 4th of July, 2006 to entertain the troops. Yet, in April of this year, Sierra was arrested for hurling a heavy glass at a man in a bar, with the end result being a cut over his eye. She was charged with felony battery with a deadly weapon, and as she was being booked, was found to have cocaine on her person, earning her an additional charge for bringing contraband into a correctional facility.
With her second stint on a reality show, Sierra was sent to a California rehab facility and was scheduled to appear on VH-1’s Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew early next year. He probably won’t have a shortage of guests. Last month, Sierra was finally putting this all behind her, pleading guilty to the charges against her. She was given twelve months probation and warned that any more trouble could negate her plea bargain.
This past week, Sierra was in a bar back in her native Florida, and the police were called on her as she was causing a disturbance, refusing to leave. She was asked to leave by the police, and crossing the street, fought with a friend, then any of the onlookers that crossed her path. With a strong smell of alcohol on her breath, Sierra became combative with the police as they followed her, and was arrested for disorderly intoxication.
A county judge denied Sierra’s bond early this morning, and according to the abcactionnews.com, told her, “Obviously the bar scene isn’t working out well for you; I would suggest you find another form of entertainment.” Because of her plea agreement for the felony earlier this year, Sierra stands to spend eleven years in jail. It’s not clear yet how this will affect her stint on Celebrity Rehab. It’s not looking good, though, as she seems headed further and further away from what was a promising career just two years ago.
