Wonder Why I Watch Ghost Whisperer?
Do I watch for the cast? For the plots? For the music? (No, No, No.) Read on to discover why.
Ghost Whisperer is the show that airs on CBS on Friday nights, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. Odds are, you’ve heard of it somewhere. And even though you probably aren’t home when it’s on, even if you were - you wouldn’t watch it. And why would you? The basic premise is so simple that I can sum it up in one sentence: Melinda Gordon (Hewitt) can see and communicate with the dead, and tries to help them cross over by resolving their issues.
And yet - I do watch occasionally. No one pays me to do this. No one has threatened my life. No one has done anything to even encourage me to watch.
Supernatural elements in stories interest me. However, the show does not fulfill me in the mythology they use, and I feel that the show often veers into the realm of wacky/cheesy a bit too often. The show doesn’t have a ton of substance. And as much as I loved Hewitt’s character ‘Sarah’ on Party of Five, my loyalty doesn’t stretch quite that far.
The main aspect that appeals to me is the general atmosphere of the show. Before you laugh that reasoning off, have you ever gone back to a restaurant where the food wasn’t as great as another place, but the atmosphere (crowd, decoration, service) was great? Well, there you go.
The fictional city the show is set in is Grandview, and it is awfully charming (although not as charming as Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls, but I’m a sucker for New England) - as is the antique store that Melinda works in and owns.
Melinda is a special treat because the costume designers and wardrobe department on this show (Joseph Porro is in charge) really go to work on creating beautiful ensembles for the character. I wouldn’t particularly want to be this character, but I would want her wardrobe.
The official site has a link to an interactive closet where you can click and look at the different pieces of outfits that Melinda has worn. When you click on an item, it will describe the item, tell you where they found it (usually it is vintage) and it lists a quote from Hewitt about why she likes that particular piece. If you enjoy clothing it’s a fun site to see, and you can check it out by clicking: here.
Another feature of the website I liked is located here. Maggie Taylor is the artist who helped create the images used in the opening title sequence. You can click through the images and see a description for why they were used.
Since the show is not too plot-intensive, but just so awfully pretty, it’s nice to have on in the background as you do something else - like last-minute Christmas cards. I wouldn’t be labeling this as ‘must see’ - but you might want to check it out sometime.
The show does not air tonight, instead Frosty the Snowman does. But you can check out previous episodes of Ghost Whisperer from CBS.com (they stream online). A new episode airs on Friday December 14th, 8 p.m.
