Dead Like Me, the Movie

Dead Like Me is a show I stumbled upon casually, from friends online in 2006. I’d never really heard of it while it aired. It was a Showtime series that aired in 2003 and 2004. Upon finding out about the show, I looked into it, thought it looked neat, and promptly ordered season one on eBay. I couldn’t have been more pleased with it, and now own both amazing seasons (although, both are misplaced – as my two younger sisters like to sneak around and borrow it because it’s so good, and it’s hard to blame someone for picking up on my keen TV taste*).

The sad thing about great TV shows is that too often they’re canceled because they don’t appeal to a big enough mass of generalized population. Dead Like Me was canceled, without even a proper series finale (although the one they had was sort of perfect, in a way). But the fans don’t want the story to be dead there, and though it’s been several years, talks have been in the works for bringing this cast back together again.

First, they were aiming for a movie. Fate is cruel, and I guess that didn’t work- but they were still aiming for a made-for-DVD movie, which would still be awesome. But of course, not perfect. As I mentioned in my post yesterday about The People’s Choice Awards (and got a comment about this subject, ergo – this post) some of the role are going to be recast/dropped. This is because certain actors and actresses have gotten other jobs that do not allow them to be part of this project.

The part of Rube Sofer could not stay, because the actor Mandy Patinkin was involved in another series. Now, I believe that he’s since left that show due to personal reasons – but I don’t think this was in time for him to be a part of this movie. But, who knows. The part of Daisy Adair, played with dramatic dynamo by Laura Harris, has been recast by Sarah Wynter (gasp!) as Laura Harris is involved in the new (horrible) show Women’s Murder Club. She also has a horrible new haircut, but that is neither here nor there. But I’m just saying, she could literally get better hair advice from Katie Holmes, at this point.

IMDB’s official page for the Dead Like Me movie has a short plot synopsis, submitted by a fan: “After the departure of Rube Sofer, a new head reaper named Cameron Kane takes over. He’s a slick businessman who couldn’t care less about helping the newly dead. Chaos ensues and brings out the worst in Daisy and Mason who begin drinking anew. George and Reggie reconnect for the first time when George reaps a new friend of Reggie’s.”

We’ve got the (I’m gonna say perfect, can I say perfect?) perfect Ellen Muth and Callum Blue back in their roles – along with some other familiar faces, and with a show this good (even my Dad likes it!) I don’t know how it can go awry…but I am sad about losing two of the gang.

* With this said, Meghan, Amy – I know you thought Firefly was going to be too ‘weird’ but one of you must have since discovered the awesomeness that it is (with Joss Whedon you never go wrong) but I really want my DVDs back!
