Heartbreaking Halftime
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m hoping there won’t be a wardrobe malfunction when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers take the stage during halftime at this year’s Super Bowl. There are some things in life that are just better left unseen, and many of the items on that list are the various parts of Tom Petty’s body.
It’s been announced that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be the headlining act on the halftime of Super Bowl XLII at the University of Phoenix Stadium, airing on Fox. In the past we’ve had The Rolling Stones, Prince, Janet Jackson, and Justin Timberlake. It always makes for an exciting show and the game is always the largest televised event of the year because of the all-day coverage. Because it’s on Fox, we’ll also get to see lots of Ryan Seacrest as he hosts the red carpet, and there will also be performances by Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5.
While Blige and Maroon 5 seem like they have more going on currently and should perhaps be the headlining act, since as a group the Heartbreakers haven’t released an album in several years, a new CD is scheduled to be released early next year, a mixture of old and new tunes. In addition, just last month, Peter Bogdanovich produced a documentary on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Running Down a Dream, aired on the Sundance Channel. Petty also hosts his own satellite radio show spinning tunes from his own collection.
Having seen the group in concert two times before, I can tell you they do put on quite a show, so I would think the Super Bowl would be no different. After all, it has to be at least as entertaining as those Super Bowl commercials.
