Carson Kressley, With an Eye On How to Look Good Naked
By LauraBelle on Jan 7, 2008 in Review
Anyone that has spent any amount of time watching Queer Eye For the Straight Guy already knew that the entire Queer Eye crew was not only extremely funny and helpful, but they were also pretty sensitive towards personal issues as well, or at least they were with guys. Carson Kressley comes out now with his second show since then, proving he is just as sensitive, if not more so, with women.
Kressley, with the popular Crowned: Mother of All Pageants already airing on the CW network, debuted this past week on the Lifetime channel with yet another reality show, How to Look Good Naked. The title is obviously one meant to catch our eye, but once you actually tune into the show, you find it’s much more sensitive that the title gives way to.
In this thirty minute series, Carson Kressley meets with women that have body issues. Even though the body they walk around day in and day out with is completely normal, they can’t stand the fact that they don’t look like the models they see on magazines and on TV. And frankly, there isn’t a woman out there, thin, heavy, or average, that hasn’t had body issues of some type at some point. We all know what that feels like to not exactly enjoy what we see in the mirror.
Before he even met with the subject of the first week’ How to Look Good Naked, Layla, Kressley took a naked photo of her (well, almost naked, she was wearing bra and panties), chopped off her head, and stuck it up on a billboard, inviting comments from passersby. The comments were all favorable, saying she had nice calves, nice feet, “nice rack(!),” etc. He then met with her as she discussed trying for twenty years to get this weight off and never being happy with what she sees in the mirror. She doesn’t even have full length mirrors in her home, because she hates it so much. With much convincing on Kressley’s part, Kayla disrobes in front of a full length mirror, and shows him what she doesn’t like, her not-flat stomach (join the club!), big thighs, flabby arms, back fat, etc. He shows her the good that he sees, like her nice calves, beautiful decolletage, etc. Watching the comments of the people seeing the billboard, she figures he edited out all the negative ones.
Kressley then takes Layla foundation shopping, as you’re never going to look good on the outside, if you are wearing the wrong things underneath. Putting on a lacey black bra and panties, she has to admit at some point that she does look sexy! He brings her out to show the other people in the store, and they agree. After shopping for clothing that is more appropriate for her shape, and getting a full makeover, it’s time for the photo shoot … naked. Layla is hesitant at first, yet still excited. This is a changed person. She does it, and later when the new and improved Layla goes up on the billboard, it’s her asking the passersby what they think, and she finds herself agreeing that she does look sexy. She learned how to look good naked.
Sure, Kressley has the old Eye he had for the Straight Guys, to know how they’ll look their best, but there’s more to How to Look Good Naked than that. He adds in some great sensitivity, knowing that he can’t just throw some new clothes at these women. He has to coach them to see that the rest of the world doesn’t see their bodies the same way they do. We see the positive; they see the negative. And by the end, they not only know how to look good naked, they know how to feel good naked.
