The Smurfs are Celebrating 50 Years of Smurfin’
If there’s something that can unite the world under a spell of joy, it may very well be the little ‘three apple high’ blue creatures that live in mushrooms and are called Smurfs.
The actual date of their 50th anniversary is October 23rd of 08, but they’re spending all of 08 leading up to that day- in celebration with Smurfberry cake and other Smurfin’ good treats.
As a child of the 80’s, I grew up watching the Smurfs on TV, and I was lucky enough to have Smurf Colorforms. (I have never been able to pinpoint exactly what happened to them but I believe that for some reason my Mother threw them out!)
The Smurfs are going to be touring Europe this year to celebrate and help promote the worthy cause of UNICEF.
My favorite Smurf is Smurfette, the only girl Smurf. There has been much speculation as to why she is the only female Smurf. Well, she was created by the wizard Gargamel to stir things up in the village and make trouble. But Papa Smurf used magic to transform her from an ugly duckling to the beauty we know today. (Mental note: The Smurfs probably aren’t impressed by Extreme Makeover shows.)
Other Smurfs include: Baby Smurf (who arrived mysteriously in the middle of the night by a stork), Poet Smurf (who worshiped Smurfette), Handy Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Lazy Smurf (who isn’t so much lazy as he is narcoleptic), Cook Smurf, Greedy Smurf, and Papa Smurf (who is like the Donald Trump of the village, except instead of money he has magic skills, and instead of a hairpiece he wears a red hat… so, maybe he’s more like Santa).
Until next time - keep Smurfin’!
