Hang Out With George of the Jungle Starting This Friday
I rather fancy myself some type of George of the Jungle purist. Of course there’s the classic original cartoon series that I remember from growing up, and you just can’t beat the live action film with Brendan Fraser starring as George. Sure, they tried to make a sequel to George starring a different actor in the role, but you just can’t top Fraser. And since he’s probably getting too old for the part, and is a little too busy with his divorce these days, Cartoon Network is coming out with an all new cartoon.
To me, George of the Jungle is kind of kitschy and retro. He’s a goof, but a lovable goof, and somewhere along the way with that second live action sequel we lost a little of that. I still think of Brendan Fraser as George when I see a can of coffee, remembering the scene where he dumps the whole thing in his mouth, stares wide-eyed at the camera, and says, “Javajavajavajavajava.” Can’t beat it. Alright, so I have a little thing for Fraser, did I mention he was divorcing? All kidding aside, it’s a great movie, and the sequel just didn’t seem to measure up, so I’m all for resurrecting the cartoon version of George.
Someone out there at Cartoon Network obviously agrees with me, as last Friday before a special preview of the new cartoon series, they aired the Fraser George of the Jungle film. This Friday, the new George of the Jungle cartoon officially lands in its regular time slot and space at 7:30 P.M. ET. Forty-one years after the premiere of the original, we can watch George as we always enjoyed him, swinging on the vines, banging into trees, and smirking into the camera. He’s joined again by Ape the … ape, Shep, his pet elephant, and his pet bird, Tookie Tookie.
This promises to be George of the Jungle just as we remembered him. If they’re smart, they’ll officially retire the live action George with the thought that you just can’t beat Brendan Fraser.
