What Do You Do When You’re Being Pulled From Both Sides of the Writer’s Strike Picket Line?
I’ve just come across Margaret Cho’s written comment on about why she won’t be appearing on Ellen. I find it to be very well-worded, and acknowledge that it was probably not easy to write.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Margaret Cho is a fashion designer, actress, author, and comedian. She is a dynamic person who voices her strong opinions. But about the reason for not appearing on Ellen, she was very gracious and tender.
Cho is an admirer of Ellen Degeneres, that much is true and cannot be denied. Cho knows Ellen, Cho likes Ellen. And still, she will not be on the show? Why? Politics. The reason is politics. Maybe you were hoping for some sort of scandal involving chia pets, but that’s all I’ve got.
Cho said, “I absolutely love Ellen, for a million reasons and for a very long time, but because of the way that I was raised, because my political views are they way they are, because I believe that workers should have the power and the ability to make their lives better, because many of my close friends are the ones picketing, I cannot cross the picket line.”
There’s really no right or wrong here…or maybe there is, but only depending on your views. If you’re lucky, you have a viewpoint, but you aren’t angry at those who have the
opposing one. It would be easy if there was a bad guy here. But there isn’t. Cho and Ellen both have their reasons for what they’re doing – both of them good.
In her statement, Cho notes that, “The reason Ellen hasn’t stopped production is because she refuses to put the 135 people who are employed on her show out of work, which is completely admirable…” After apologizing, Cho wrote that she hopes to one day again be offered a chance to sit with Ellen. I hope that she gets to.
And I hope they dance.
Until next time,
