American Idol – The Heartland Checks In

American Idol IISimon Cowell has said the people that they met in Omaha, Nebraska were terrific, and he really felt like they were in the Heartland of America. I can see that watching American Idol tonight, but I really wish we had some singers that were so exciting or some that were at least so bad I had to hit instant replay on the TiVo repeatedly. Here’s our hopefuls from the Heartland.

Jason Rich, 21, of Stout, Iowa. He was so excited to audition, he just couldn’t get it together, and forgot the words to When You Say Nothing At All. Simon gave him numerous chances, and Jason even failed it on the last chance he was given. However, he stole another chance and finally got it out, and had a very interesting quality to his voice. He’s let through to Hollywood with a reminder he won’t get a second chance next time. He has got to lose those nerves!

Rachel Wicker, 23, of Richmond, Missouri.
She’s another interesting auditioner, as she is an avid arm wrestler, even wining a few championships. She has a pretty good country sound to her, but Randy complains about the yodel, and wonders why all country artists seem to get that way. Rachel claims it’s natural, booty then have to ask yourself why do only country sniggers do that if it’s “natural.” She makes it, then arm wrestles Paula.

Samantha Sidley, 22, of Los Angeles. She’s told by Ryan when he switches places with Paula that she needs to work on her confidence, as he doesn’t like the moving around. The other judges disagree and order him to switch back with Paula. The regular judges like Samantha a lot, and she’s through, even though Ryan would have done that as well.

Angelica Hunt, 17, of Kenosha, Wisconsin. She had a hard time getting along with her father and moved in with her grandmother. She still leaves her dad phone messages, though, singing his favorite song. Hopefully he’ll be proud of her tonight, enough that maybe they can work through their problems, as she makes it to Hollywood being told to quit mimicking other singers and just work on her own thing.

David Cook, 24, of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He’s a rocker and we need some of those to get through this time. Looking like a combination of Chris Daughterly and Blake Lewis, he makes it through with a sound closer to Chris. The decision to let him through isn’t a difficult one.

Leo Marlowe, 23, Charlotte, Iowa.
Last up for the night, he refers to himself as a homecoming queen and sings well enough to not do bad on a Donnie Hathaway song that is more known to American Idol fans as an Elliott Yamin tune. He gets through without question.

I think Leo is the only one we remember next week, although we might possibly remember Rachel, only because of her arm wrestling. Other than that, I think even by the Miami auditions on Wednesday night, we’ll have forgotten many of the good auditions from tonight.
