The Grizz’s Super Bowl preview

Just in case some of you were not aware of this.  Both the biggest sporting event and biggest television event of the year is taking place in just two days.  That’s right, I am talking about the seventeenth rerun of episode number 34 of Sienfield.  However most of you were probably thinking about the Super Bowl.  While I am sure that the episode of Sienfield will be most interesting, I figure that a post about that would not be as much fun to read.  So I will do like millions of other 30is age men are doing and write as though I am an expert who knows more than anyone else! Except in this case I, of course, am right, and do know more than anyone else.

Now there may be some people who are not planning on watching the Super Bowl.  These people will likely say such silly things as “I don’t know what the big deal about a football game is”, or “Football is dumb.”  However I must assert that not only is football not dumb.  That during the Super Bowl we will see an epic battle unfold.  It has a David and a Goliath, it has twisted genusis and handsome leading men.  It has monsters and maidens galore, and just when you thought that it couldn’t get any bigger Tom Petty is starring in a guest star role.  Tell me how any thing could be better?

Seriously though.  This Super Bowl is actually one dang exciting match up.  On one side are the seemingly invincible New England Patriots looking to make history as the first team ever to go undefeated since the sixteen game schedule started.  They bring with them the arm of one of the best quarterbacks to play the game.  The mind of one of the most mysterious coaches the game has ever seen and a supporting cast of players whose only mantra is perfection.  Standing on the other side of the fifty yard line are the New York Giants.  This team has an up an coming young talent named Eli Manning starting as Quarterback.  Also coming with the giants are two of the most ferocious quarterback eating monsters in football in Micheal Strahan and Osi Umenyiora.  However the biggest weapon they are bringing with them is pure heart and fire.  This is sure to be one very memorable matchup.

What the Patriots have:

The patriots are loaded with talent in skill.  They boast one of the best offensive lines in the NFL today.  Standing behind this formidable line is Tom Brady, two time Super Bowl MVP and reigning NFL MVP.  Now this quarterback has some weapons the explosive and record breaking Randy Moss as well as the ever ready clutch receiver Wes Welker.  They have capable play makers in the running back departments and the most experienced Defensive Unit in the game.  But their true strength lies in the forboding genuis of Bill Bellichick and his focus on your job first mentality.  It is this refusal to accept anything but the best effort that has shaped the patriots into the team they are.

What the Patriots don’t have:

If they can be truly criticized on any point in their game it is special teams.  They have allowed several opponents to run back both kick and punt returns for touchdowns and have had less than ideal field position more often than not.  However this seems to have not been much of a factor as the defense was among the stingiest in points allowed, and the offense could score from virtually anywhere at will.

What the Giants Have:

the New York Giants have an up and coming quarterback in Eli Manning who appears to have gotten over the jitters at just the right time.  He has performed simply phenomenal during the playoffs.  It helps that he has two very physical and talented receivers and a solid running game.  However it is the defense that is the Giants true strength, their defense led the league in sacks and they had a good many turnovers. Finally there is their coach Tom Coughlin.  Deciding to present a softer side to his team, he has managed to win them over to his way of thinking.  Now that they buy into his system, they are in the big game.  However If there is a place they can win this game it is in the defense.

What the Giants don’t have:

While Eli seems to be playing the type of ball he was expected too, he had earned a name for being inconsistent.  Will the pressure of the Super Bowl be to much for this young QB?  If Eli has a bad game, this game is all but over.  The one thing the New York Giants can not do is give the Patriots any additional chances.  However if Eli can stay smart and avoid costly interceptions than the Giants have a shot.

Who will win?

While I normally have a soft spot for the underdog, I don’t this year.  I think it has something to do with the Giants crushing my Broncos in a previous Super Bowl, and there is also the fact that I am a Pats fan as well.  However neither of these have to do with my decision.  Simply put I don’t see how the giants can manage to beat the perfect Pats.  They have a chance, but I don’t think it’s enough of one to justify an upset pick, so I am going with the establishment on this pick and pointing to the pats.
