Mattress Memories

Maybe it’s a rite of passage in growing up, but the other day I went to shop for a new mattress and it just seemed bizarre. For a set, it’s expensive, but it’s important to get a good one. Which means you can’t just pick by looking.

As I tentatively sat on one of the mattresses, the salesman told me I should lay back for the full effect.

I maneuvered myself onto the mattress, and an image shot into my head. It was an image of Charlotte from Sex and the City. For fans of the show, I’m sure you know what scene I’m talking about. It’s from season four, in the episode Ghost Town.

Sex and the City - The Complete Fourth Season

Charlotte had just married Trey MacDougal, and she decided she wanted to redecorate their place, including getting a softer mattress. A mattress that Trey’s Mom had personally picked out, oh boy.

Things are fine, until Trey’s mother, Bunny MacDougal, shows up. He hadn’t cut the umbilical cord yet (every woman’s worst fear, or what?) so Trey thought it was all fun and games. But you know what they say… it’s all fun and games until you’re lying on a bed with your husband and his mother.

The imagery of the scene was perfect - it showed how Trey was in the middle of the two women both vying for his attention. Trey wanted to bring his Mom into their bed - which is weird. Actually, the way it happened - Charlotte was the last to be invited onto the bed, which was good symbolism for marrying into their (bizzaro) family.

Charlotte realized she didn’t like the firm mattress. But more than that - she really realized she didn’t like Trey’s Mother involving herself in their marriage. Seems wise.

I’m not sure if I agree with Charlotte about dust ruffles, though.

Until later,

Jessica
