Big Brother 9 - Possible Twist

Julie ChenA day before Julie Chen officially announces the names of the houseguests for Big Brother 9, we receive information on another possibility for this season’s twist. At this point, I’m thinking I liked all the things we were conjuring up based off the “Dirty Little Secrets” commercial than what it looks like it might end up being.

A few new commercials have appeared on CBS, one featuring Julie Chen. These spots are indicating that the twist for Big Brother 9 will be that each of the houseguests enters the house with a “soul mate,” and it seems as if the soul mates are strangers, not people previously known to them. The announcer tells us if the houseguests aren’t careful, they could be evicted along with their soulmate.

I’m just looking for a little clarification here, as I’d like to know where the “Dirty Little Secrets” fits in. Is the whole big secret just that people didn’t know going in about the soul mates? That’s pretty lame, if it is. Is everyone going in with a soul mate and a secret? Will everyone think they’re the only ones to have a soulmate, but the dirty little secret is that everyone has a soulmate?

Any way you look at it, it just doesn’t pan out as exciting as everyone walking in the house with a dirty little secret that would rock everyone’s socks off. That was a really exciting scenario, and the TV spot with the song playing in the background was enough to excite us all.

It could propose some interesting dynamics on Big Brother 9. What if one person fell for someone that wasn’t his “soul mate,” but one that was meant for someone else? Imagine the problems that could ensue. It would be the Daniele/Nick/Jen scenario all over again, which I’m sure producers are banking on. They have to be banking on a lot of hooking up, probably to ensure another good season for Showtime’s Big Brother: After Dark. Maybe they can turn Howie’s old Jack Shack into condos.

While this twist is initially leaving my unexcited, it’s making me think back to how unexciting the rivals twist was last year, and how it ended up being one of the best seasons ever, if not the best, with a great cast that was built out of what seemed to be the leftovers from other seasons. Being that they came up with the season on the fly, looking to an uneventful TV season because of the writers’ strike, maybe this is really the best we can hope for, but I’m still going to hope for a little more out of this whole “dirty little secrets” thing.
