Reactions to Lost : 4×04 Eggtown

The fourth episode of the fourth season of Lost aired yesterday night. It was called Eggtown and it was a Kate-centric episode. What do we have to discuss? Possible time travel! Smoochies! Conspiracies! Grouchy Locke! Kate’s never-ending love triangle! Xanadu!

As we began the episode we saw that Locke (who has been getting progressively a little bit more crazy and power hungry) was keeping Ben in a locked area. He also prepared him delicious food. Kind of ironic, and I doubt it would be poisoned since Locke wants answers, not a corpse. If Jacob is a ghost, I think Miles and Jacob should be talking somewhere while Ben and Locke both angst over not having Jacob around. Ben pretended not to know who Miles was - as if (sorry, channeling Cher from Clueless!) Locke would fall for that. Ben did succeed in pissing Locke off though - rather severely.

“So here we are, just like old times, except I’m locked in a different room. And you’re more lost than you ever were.” - Ben

I sort of cringe whenever a TV show says the name of their show on the show. It’s different when it’s a character’s name. And it’s not like they’ve never said ‘we’re lost’ before - but having it said so pointedly almost seems like bad writing. Except, it’s not - it’s the most natural word to use for that sentence. Still, I cringed!

Claire did the cutest thing when Sawyer came up to Kate and Claire. She semi-obviously left Kate and Sawyer to be alone and talk. I can’t help but think that Claire was putting on a brave face. She’s happy to know that Sawyer and Kate have a (twisted but cute if not sexy) relationship, but she’s very much missing Charlie and feeling the bittersweet ebb of grief to know she’ll never have a relationship with him now. The only relationship she can have is with his memory, or her idea of him. (Or, you know, unless he appears to her like he did to Hurley.)

Anyway, when Sawyer and Kate talked it was very intense right off the bat. Sawyer tried to find out why Kate had stayed behind with them instead of going with her initial choice of being with Jack’s team. She refused to tell him, citing the reason as a trust issue. As in, she doesn’t trust him. Ouch! Sawyer then accused Kate of being behind to spy for Jack, which she vehemently denied. I think she’s there to sleep on a nice bed and have Claire give her a tattoo of an alpaca. But, that’s just me.

Finally we got to the flash forward and we saw Kate make her way (looking flawless with perfect makeup - weird to see) into a courthouse as paparazzi was hounding her. At court, she plead the only way a wild spirit will plead, no matter how guilty they are.

“Miss Austin, how do you plead?” - Judge

“Not guilty because I’m beautiful and I was left on an island to suffer, and do you see this skin, it’s freaking flawness! I should be doing a Neutrogena commercial.” - Kate

“Not guilty.” - Kate

She was considered a flight risk, and taken into custody. We saw her later in jail, meeting with her lawyer. He told her their best bet was for her to make a deal, for like 15 years in jail. Which is 15 more than Kate wanted to spend. Can’t blame her, although I’m sure she ate worse food on the island. The 15 years would actually be a ‘light’ sentence compared to what she could get (something like 20 years for each count, plus a life sentence for murder).

Kate had confessed to her mother she’d killed her father, and a major problem was that her mom is a star witness. So the lawyer told her they had to make the case about her character. He told Kate, “I want him in the courtroom.” Which begged the question - who? Kate said no. My automatic guesses were, in this order: Jack, Sawyer, Locke, Ben, Big Bird. It turned out to be — her son. Which is…wow. So, Kate got pregnant and had a son. Who is the father?

In the courtroom, Kate’s lawyer apologized to her right before he brought in Dr. (well-groomed) Jack Shepard as a witness. Kate had not allowed this. But as he testified, things were going fine. Jack was telling the court how he met Kate, how she had told him she was a fugitive as opposed to hiding the fact. As Jack explained how Kate had helped people, so naturally Kate stood up and objected. I don’t know why. Was it too emotional to hear? If it could help keep you out of jail, c’mon Kate! Let the handsome Dr. lie for you.

When cross-examined, Jack was asked point-blank if he love ‘the defendant’. He said, “No, not anymore.” That was good for her case in court, but bad for all Jate lovers. Yikes. In fact, I think I heard a huge sigh around the East Coast when Jack said that. Of course, maybe he was just saying that - as otherwise his testimony would be so much more biased.

Hurley put on Xanadu - that reminded me, I’ve never seen that. (Netflix time!) Anyway, there is a huge cuteness factor in that Kate and Claire are roomies, as are Hurley and Sawyer. It’s like mini fraternities and sororities.

There is no love between Locke and Kate, if you ever thought there was. Back in the ‘present day’ Kate could not find out where Locke was keeping Miles, and he wasn’t telling. Very conveniently - Hurley was bringing a tray of food across the yard. Kate intercepted and tricked him into telling her the location for Miles.

Kate asked Miles if he knew who she was, and if he knew what she did. Miles said he would tell Kate, if Kate brought Ben to him for ‘a minute’. What are they gonna do for a minute, make out? No one wants to see creepy Ben get any action!

Kate then went on to ask Sawyer to help her break Ben free from the basement. He showed up at Locke’s door with a board game. Sawyer then told Ben about Kate’s plan to break out Ben. Doublecross?! Sawyer ran with Locke to where Miles was being kept - the boathouse, but he was already gone (gone baby, gone!) because Kate and Miles had made their way to Locke’s basement to see Ben.

Miles told Ben he is willing to tell his employer that Ben is dead, for 3.2 million dollars.

“Why not 3.3 or 3.4?” - Ben

At first, I was not entirely sure if Sawyer had been playing Locke or not. Locke had to get out of his house for Kate to get in, so I decided Sawyer was playing Locke. (And then this was later confirmed.)

As for Kate’s answers - she got them. Miles knew exactly who she was and told her she should just stay on the island and pretend she died. But he didn’t know who she was for any special reason, he hadn’t come for her. They came for Ben.

When Locke realized what Kate had done, he ordered Kate out of ‘his’ camp. She looked very wounded. She then sought solace in Sawyer. (Who - by the by? Makes reading look very sexy.) Sawyer told Kate he ‘unbanished’ her. Then he scooped her up, and they got very cuddly. He told Kate he’d keep her safe - and then there were smoochies. Big, fiery smoochies! However, no sex.

The next morning Kate told Sawyer she wasn’t pregnant. When Sawyer said he was glad (very glad) Kate wasn’t pregnant, she got pouty, upset, and decided to go back to the beach. Sawyer then called her on her indecisive wishy-washy ways of bouncing between him and Jack. That pissed her off even more, probably because it’s true.

Near the end of the episode we saw flash!forward Kate with her mother.

“Is it true, what he said - Dr. Shepard? That you’re a hero?” - Kate’s mom.

Her mother told her that she could possibly die anyday, and that she did not want to testify against Kate. But, in exchange for not testifying, she wanted to meet her grandson. And Kate denied this request.

However, later on in court they say her mother could not testify because she was ill. At first I thought maybe her mother had died. And if she did - was this an accidental natural death, or a murder?

In court, Kate got played and I think she knew it was an attempt to play her, but she’s going to trick them anyway. The lawyer made a deal, saying she had 10 years probation and she would not leave the state. (Which is how I think she was getting played, the mom and lawyer made it this way so Kate would see her Mom. But of course, Kate will simply deny this request.) When Kate left, Jack was there to greet her. Jack told her that he didn’t mean what he said in there. He does love her.

Then we found out that Jack didn’t want to see Kate’s baby. I was guessing because it’s Sawyer’s child. I’m was starting to feel like Sawyer might not have been one of the Oceanic Six… but then I quickly believed Claire was not one of the six.

Kate’s kid is named…Aaron. And he’s older than he should be. So, is that Claire’s baby Aaron? Did Claire not make it?! Sad… And, in season one Claire saw a psychic who said that her baby had to be raised by her and only her, or bad things would happen. So what does this mean that Kate is raising Aaron? I know Kate wanted a baby but I don’t think she would have stolen him from Claire. So did Claire die? If so, how? If not, why did she stay on the island?

Also - does no one know it’s not Kate’s baby? I mean, no one who wasn’t on the island? Kate’s Mom referred to Aaron as her grandson

We also found out that the helicopter with Sayid is missing. It never arrived to safety. So that’s something we’ll learn about next week. Can you wait? (Speculate about time travel and time warps and stuff like that, cause I bet that’s why the helicopter is lost in the abyss.)

Until later,

  1. The last reveal of who the last of the Oceanic 6 was is brill. I loved it :) I don’t think Claire died. I think even if you weren’t part of the Oceanic 6, it didn’t mean you were dead. I think it just means you chose to stay on the island.

It’s suprising that Sawyer isn’t part of the six, but then again, we saw he didn’t want to go back to civilization.

This show rocks - and I believe now that they have a definite ending time, everything from here on out will be more brilliant.

  2. I *hope* Claire didn’t die. I also hope Kate didn’t have to steal Aaron for any reason!

Sawyer still *could* be one of the Oceanic six… hmm…
