Significant Numbers for Joss Whedon’s “Firefly”
Firefly is one of the saddle shoe shows that I talked about yesterday. It was canceled after one season. In what ‘verse is that fair? Psh. But the outpouring of devotion later led to a full-length feature film based on the show, entitled Serenity. At least we got that.

I encourage people to look into Firefly if they haven’t before. ( Firefly - The Complete Series ) Not only is there not many other good things on TV, but it’s a really great show that I recommend to people all the time. And you have to give it a decent chance. When I watched the first two episodes I felt like I didn’t jive with the show, I was ready to abandon the DVDs. But by the fourth episode, I was hooked.
Now, I bring you…
Firefly by the numbers!
9 - The number of main cast members on the TV show.
11 - The number of episodes actually aired on TV.
13 - The total number of episodes you can find on the DVDs. Unless you count the pilot as two episodes for the two hours.
7 - The number of episodes with commentaries on the DVD boxset.
1 - The number of times Mal was left naked in the desert.
2 - The number of actresses given the role of Inara. (Rebecca Gayheart was cast first, then replaced with Morena Baccarin.)
0 - The number of of aliens on the show.
2 - The countries that are the main superpowers. America and China. Many people spoke with Chinese phrases in the show.2 - The number of hours in the pilot episode. (For running-time on air, actual time is less)
4 - The number of individual characters kidnapped in the series (Mal, Wash, Simon, River)
3 - The number of episodes that Joss Whedon directed himself.
1 - The number of episodes that Jane Espenson wrote. (I love her. She also wrote for Buffy. The episode she wrote is probably my favorite episode.)
2 - The number of people affected by the the drug known as “the good night kiss”. (Mal and Inara)
2 - The number of times ‘land’ is sung in the theme song.
3 - The number of times ’sky’ is sung in the theme song.
1 - The number of times ’sea’ is sung in the theme song.
Countless: the number of times Kaylee does something sweet, the number of ‘new earths’, the number of times Inara makes tea, the number of times River acted unusual, the number of times Simon did something to help his sister - River, the number of guns that Jayne would like to own, the number of jobs Mal had the crew do, the number of displays of bravery, and the number of fans.
Until later,
Jessica Rae
