Makeovers and Make-up Challenges on America’s Next Top Model, Cycle Ten

Cycle ten of America’s Next Top Model brought us the inevitable and entertaining makeover episode last night.

The girls were taken to Wal*Mart and had a Cover Girl makeover challenge of applying their own make-up. Though there was the trouble of having to apply make-up using one mirror, the models (in training) were specifically told the three products they should focus on.

This means they were told exactly what the judges were looking for. This should have made it easier for the models, and the show (probably) wouldn’t have done this if they were not supposed to endorse three specific new Cover Girl products.

America's Next Top Model is disappointing me!

I was stunned at the results of this make-up challenge. If you want to be a model, one could easily assume that you’ve played with make-up on your own before. (Aside from Lauren, she is excused.) While a mirror is beneficial for application of products, if you’re in a competition you do your best. They had to apply foundation, and if you dab it on lightly and and blend it in with your fingers (the warmth of your fingertips helps it blend) you’ll only need a few seconds in the mirror to check if it’s okay. They also had to apply lip gloss, which can be easily applied by dabbing it on with your fingers to get a nice and easy shine - and since it’s gloss it’s much easier than lipstick. Mascara is the most difficult thing they had to apply, but I’m pretty certain I can apply this without a mirror if I have to.

The girls who did well were Whitney and Claire. Allison did okay, although she seemed to have gobbed on the lip gloss and the mascara. Fatima did badly. The girl who won the challenge was Claire who had a perfect glossy pout, and flushed cheeks.

After the make-up challenge Dominique and Claire vocalized that they ‘wanted it more’ because they were Mom’s. Amis agreed with them. Somehow I doubt she’ll feel too bad if she beats them.

Since I’m about to talk about Barbie, I want to mention that I kinda love this bumper sticker.

In an odd comedic moment, Allison (reminding me of Sarah Silverman even more) had Barbie Dolls and used them to act out a scene of one calling the other’s backside fat. I want to know where the frak she GOT Barbie Dolls from? Did she bring them? Whoa. Anyway, it turned out that Fatima had made a comment about Allison and said she had an over-eating-disorder, so Allison was retaliating in a more creative way. I thought Fatima was done being bratty to others?

When it came time for makeovers Jay Manuel said that Tyra had been so secretive about what was going to happen that even he didn’t know. I sort of doubt this, but okay. The twist, delivered by Tyra, was that no girl was going to be told what was going to happen to her before she was in the chair and it had already been done. How much do you want to bet that they were hoping some girl would get half of her hair shaved, freak out, and run away with her unfinished hair?

Anya got platinum blonder hair which actually washes her out, and accentuates her somewhat large nose. Whitney got a wave of huge Pamela Anderson-esque blonde hair. I much preferred her dark hair, which really showed off her beautiful eyes.

The worst makeover was given to Dominique. They cut off most of her hair. When it’s curled it looks okay but when it’s naturally just curled under she resembles an old Mom. Later Tyra said ‘we’ll get you the hair color I told them to give you’ - and I want to know…uh, why didn’t they give it to her in the first place? If they give her platinum blonde hair she might be able to do a Marilyn Monroe look.

Hopefully that’ll look better than this: Marilyn Monroe WigClassic Marilyn Monroe Wig

The red trend was bigger than normal last night. Aimee got red hair with bangs, which looked great on her. Lauren was given long strawberry blonde hair. It’s very pretty and girly. She resembles Lauren Ambrose (of Six Feet Under) to me, now. Allison’s dark hair was turned bright red. She reminds me of Isla Fisher with this hair.

For more look-alike news, let me say that Tyra looked a lot like Dominique in a picture they showed (pre-Dominique’s make-under). Also, Tyra said that Katarzyna looks like ‘a baby Paulina’ - just with darker hair. Now, does this work in her favor or not? Will Paulina vote for a girl who looks like her, or does she not want any copycats?

Claire had her hair buzzed off and dyed platinum blonde. Amis got long blonde hair that’s kind of wavy. Stacy-Ann took it in stride when her long girly hair was chopped off and spiked. You know she had to be internally cringing because she’d told the camera that what she wanted was super-long hair like Naomi Campbell. Anyone think they purposefully gave her the opposite?

Marvita got a ‘horse mane hair weave‘ which Tyra said she invented, but I’m awfully sure she did not invent this. This hair looks great on Marvita. Although, you wouldn’t think that having any resemblance to a horse would work in your favor.

I heard the theme song for Dead Like Me in this episode! That show rocks, always. Dead Like Me - The Complete First SeasonDead Like Me - The Complete Second SeasonDead Like Me Seasons 1 and 2 Bundle

Fatima’s orange hair was changed to chestnut brown. She was given long straight hair via a weave. She was the girl who complained. She even started crying at some point. It looked great on her. Oddly, she said getting the weave was ‘the most painful experience’. This being said from a girl who suffered female mutilation, this makes me wonder how much hair weaves truly hurt.

In the weekly Saleisha spot, Saleisha sat with a girl who was ill, and said that she helped her to get a makeover. But all she did was sit there. And she’s not famous enough for her presence alone to help anyone feel better. I’m sure she didn’t arrange this. So really, she didn’t do anything but show up and say what they told her to say. The saddest part is the girl who got the makeover looked a lot prettier in her photo shoot, and was a lot more relaxed speaking to the camera. Irony, oh irony!

The girls modeled lingerie from Elle MacPherson’s line, and Elle MacPherson, herself, was there to supervise. They models were on a yacht, using the Brooklyn bridge as the background. Not too shabby! The lingerie photo shoot was a good choice so the girls could rock their new haircuts.

Claire said that Elle gave them the most helpful advice, which was ‘to be yourself’. I’m sorry but, don’t five-year-olds know this advice from Sesame Street? Furthermore, isn’t that a blow to Tyra’s ego? Another model is helping these girls more than her! Marvita was also shown saying she had never met anyone as nice as Elle. She did meet Tyra…I’m just sayin’!

Speaking of Sesame Street…

Sesame Street - Old School, Vol. 1 (1969-1974) Omg, I can’t believe this is available! Pretty inexpensive, too.

I really liked when Paulina told Anya, “the shot isn’t as beautiful as you are” because that’s very good constructive criticism that doesn’t tear a girl down but also offers an interesting insight.

Tyra acted odd at panel, literally making Miss Jay and Nigel touch her booty. Nigel tried to compliment her but I don’t think touching her ass was on his agenda for the day.

Allison was cocky through the entire show, basically. This was her downfall. Dominique and Allison were the last two girls. Dominique does not show her confidence, but Allison’s experiencing isn’t showing - and she doesn’t know how to say ‘thank you’. Dominique stayed. She started to walk forward an then hugged Allison, who started crying. I think this was very sweet.

The girl with the best photo (called first) was Lauren! I’m very happy because she is awesome. I am also enormously happy with the pick for…

The Cover Girl of the week: Claire!

Like so many of you who watched the episode, I’ll now be studying how to lift my eyebrows while relaxing my mouth like Christy Turlington.

Until I master that,

  1. I read an article in the New York Times about those Sesame Street DVDs when they came out last year. Apparently they come with a warning saying they may not be suitable for today’s preschoolers.

  2. Hahaha. Omg. That’s great. I have specific stuff I would love to see again - like the kittens playing in a dollhouse, and Ernie against a dopplegang pharaoh. Oh, man.

  3. * Doppelganger Pharaoh
