Why I’m not in Favor of Britney Spears being on “How I Met Your Mother”

Britney Spears has indeed planned a comeback. It will be on March 24th, on the CBS TV show How I Met Your Mother. This is big on my WTF-o-meter. As a fan of the show, I am against this. Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised. Read on to see the reasons I am against Britney being on the show.

Britney Spears...oh nozNothing can make me feel more wary and suspicious than Britney Spears returning to TV. I think it’s just bad business. Literally. It’s a bad business move that I think will backfire. Then again, who knows? My crystal ball has gone missing. But my intuition still works.

How I Met Your Mother is a show I don’t want tainted, or to have the quality compromised. Britney has never shown any true acting chops (Crossroads, Will & Grace), so I don’t expect she’ll have anything great to offer us. In fact, we’re lucky the show isn’t taped live, because I know you haven’t forgotten that incoherent, lackluster ‘performance’ of Gimme More (yea…no thanks) she gave at the 2007 MTV Music Video Awards.

I feel bad for her about that. I try to think that maybe she was pressured into doing it when she wasn’t ready. Even what she wore was a disaster unto itself. She’s always worn skimpy clothing so that’s what she went with - but with her body type at that moment would have looked better in something, anything! - different to flatter her. And the fact that she forgot the lyrics and looked bored singing her own song? Ouch. It was painful to watch. And yet most of us did, a couple times. Britney is like a car crash, and people will watch her self-destruct. But what she needs is to get out of the spotlight, I would think.

However, since people want to watch her, and she probably wants to prove to people she’s still ‘got it’ - it’s a good strategy for both How I Met Your Mother and Britney Spears to bring her on board the show. People respect the show. But will that respect translate to Britney? I don’t think so.

With a season four of the series not confirmed yet, this is good for the show. However, I feel the show is better than stooping to this ratings ploy. True fans of the show, I would think, understand this. I know that I don’t need an ex-pop singer in a cameo to encourage me want to watch. If it will help the show, that’s good, and if it will help Britney - well, that’s good, too. I’m just not so sure this will be a win-win. Someone will lose. But who?

Even more disturbing news to tack onto this is that Alicia Silverstone’s return to TVAlicia Silverstone (Miss Match), which was supposed to be on How I Met Your Mother this season, may have been halted due to Britney’s part. Ausiello of TV Guide talked about Alicia returning, and how she might even be the girl that Ted Mosby marries. If she were the mother, that would be amazingly cool. But, she might still be on the show. There are theories that she and Britney might even be in the same episode as a Doctor and her receptionist. (Britney being the receptionist, named Abby.)

Britney Spears, please don’t disappoint us. I challenge you to surprise me! Otherwise, I know a guy who knows a guy who can frame you for stealing a bunch of Propel Fitness Water. Then again, you mostly just drink Red Bull and you’ve done much more embarrassing things on your own… *slides eyes away*

What can I say, I was always a bigger fan of Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore.

I should be worried about this, but I think the writers if HIMYM are smart enough to make anything work. It’s all about pop culture done in a very tasteful and smartly in-your-face way that I ADORE about this show.

So I look forward to Britney being on here; the shows I’ve seen her in (Will and Grace, SNL) haven’t disappointed me at all.

I agree, the best for Britney is to move to an exotic island and stay there for about a year or two with her kids. Be a mom. Hell, be a human!

Also, if it means HIMYM will be back for another season, as long as they don’t lose the integrity of the show and its brilliant comedy, I say, let’s go for it.
