“Criminal Minds” Makes for Captivating TV Viewing

It frequently feels as though there are so many crime-based dramas on TV that they blur and seem indistinguishable to the average viewer (like say, me). This is to say, unless you’re already invested in a certain show, it can be hard to feel like one is a better choice than the other. I’ve never latched onto many crime shows. However, I caught an episode of Criminal Minds the other night, and now I’m earnestly hooked.

the Cast

This show premiered in 2005. But I am going to employ the phrase ‘better late than never’ - and I encourage you to do the same. The first episode I saw (a repeat, I’ve seen two now) was the one where my favorite character (based just on that episode and their prior work on another TV show) ended up leaving the show. But that doesn’t mean I’m packing up my Diet Coke and leaving, too. No. I’m ready to get into this show!A screencap from season three of Criminal Minds

According to CBS, seven new episodes for season three will begin airing on April 2nd, 2008.

The show is based on FBI profilers who have to be one step ahead of terrorists and serial killers in order to stop them. the tagline for the show is, To catch a criminal, you have to think like one. The psychological insights offered are thought-provoking. In fact, each episode begins with a voiceover of a famous quotation or line of poetry.

This contributes to your own self-analysis as you watch an episode. I love quotes. Especially the ones that make you really think. When I was in high school I took a creative writing class where, at the beginning of each class, we’d have a quote to write about for five minutes. It’s an eye-opening tactic.

Here are a few select quotes that have been used on the show so far:

“Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn’t people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them.” - Rose Kennedy (Season one, Plain Sight)

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with family.” - Anthony Brandt (Season one, Machismo )

“One begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.” - Sherlock Holmes (Season two, Profiler Profiled)

Good news for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris) will be back on the show in April. Specifically, April 2nd. The episode is called Damaged, and Brendon plays the character Kevin Lynch.

Criminal Minds airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST

  1. It’s Kevin Lynch. Nicholas Brendon plays Kevin Lynch!

  2. Oooh, I’ll change that first name right now! Thanks.

  3. Request poet name and quote used at end of March 15, 2008 Criminal Minds show, partial “we will reap not but rather find strenght in what remains behind”.
Appreciate that writers realize that officers are actually bothered by what they have to deal with in their jobs.

  4. Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of
    Early Childhood - William Wordsworth

You can find it here, but I suggest using Firefox to search the phrase forthe phrase ‘what remains behind’, because it’s a looong page.
