American Idol goes Day Tripping, Again

I have astounding news you may not believe. I watched American Idol last night. So, my first impressions of the group are from when they’ve already been given some advice. Some have been taking it, some haven’t. The buzzword last night seemed to be ‘risks‘ - as in, Simon, Paula, and Randy all told the contestants they needed to take more of them. They were careful to say they might not always pay off, but they could.

I think ‘risk’ to some of the contestants means ‘do something totally different’ when it should mean ‘do what you’re already doing, but take risks with that - make it more, make it grander, more interesting, new within that context’. If you know you’re a great country crooner and you think that taking a risk in singing a song in a pop way is going to get you noticed, it will. But, quite possibly in a bad way! You don’t have to change who you are or what you do to be the winner. But this is a big show, and they want to see you taking chances on one-upping your own best performances.

Brooke White is sunny

I think my favorite singer is Brooke White. She has a vibrant personality, and she seems passionate in this way that makes me want to listen to her talk, sing, and all out Bingo numbers. She didn’t do too well, according to Simon. Simon also mentioned that he knew she would be in something yellow and with a yellow backdrop since she was singing The Beatles song Here Comes the Sun. Well, yes Simon. But had she not done that he would have been complaining saying ‘you’re singing about the sun, wear yellow!’ It would have been weird for her to be wearing green, you know? It was an obvious choice but also a good one. I liked her rendition a bit. Although I think a Beatles song is really difficult to pull off for anyone.

I also enjoyed David Cook. He sang Day Tripper. He looked happy to be up there, and not all that ’smug’ as Simon said he did. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I did not enjoy Amanda Overmeyer. I just don’t like her entire package. This includes her skunk-like hair. I’m not against fun, dyed hair. But I’m against it when it looks bad. Paula also made a similar petty observation last night, to contestant Kristy Lee Cook.

After telling Kristy how her performance was good, not the best (basically what she always says, I guess) she had great praise for how Kristy looked. Kristy did look cute. Although, when she made a comment about how she felt like her dress was too short, that bothered me. If you don’t feel good in what you’re wearing - if you feel uncomfortable, that will be reflected on the stage.

Kristy Lee Cook

I was somewhat baffled to hear Kristy a few times say how this ‘Beatles thing’ was new to her, and she’d never heard the song she picked. I don’t know much about her background, but how is it possible that she doesn’t know The Beatles? And why would she admit that? That isn’t going to exactly lend you any musical credentials.

On an unrelated note, Kristy looks a lot like Kate Bosworth.
