Summer Glau of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” is a Pin-up Girl in Vanity Fair

I swear I’m not lazy, it’s just that Vanity Fair summarizes it best when they say: “Since 1992, (Vanity Fair’s) Vanities section has opened with a full-page portrait of a promising young star. In September 2006, we tweaked the format: the Vanities opener now features an up-and-coming actress in a 50s-style pin-up shot.”

For April 2008 the girl is Summer Glau. I really like the concept, and the picture is gorgeous in this way that makes you wish you didn’t mind wearing clear plastic raincoats. But you have to realize that on your own the look might be lacking, almost old-ladyish. Or if you’re a guy, it might look supremely odd (depending on your strut). One thing is clear, Summer looks very different to me in this picture.

Of course, I’ve seen her mostly as the disheveled River in Firefly (Firefly – The Complete Series) and in the movie Serenity (Serenity Collector’s Edition). Now we’ve been seeing her on Fox as Cameron on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The later role requires her to look a lot more polished than our dear River, but even so, this pin-up picture looks so different in the face. I do wish she looked a bit more recognizable in the image, but I still like it.

By the by – those enviable sublime legs? Those are thanks to years of being a dancer. In fact, she’s been dancing since she was 12. Her focus was in ballet, but she can also tango and flamenco dance. Needless to say, pick her to be your partner in a dance competition. If she was ever on Dancing with the Stars, she’d win. But her career will hopefully never come to that.

River Tam was a troubled girl. Although Summer is beautiful, they never played up her looks (aside from the natural beauty that broke through) as that wasn’t well-suited to her character at that time. You can see an example of this in the picture on the right. (It’s a screencap so it’s not the best quality ever, forgive me?)

In September 2007 the Vanities girl was Alexa Davalos. Alexa has a connection to Summer because they both worked on a Joss Whedon show. In fact, Summer was in an episode of Angel (Angel – Seasons 1-5 30-Disc DVD Set), and Alexa was in several episodes. But no, they were never in the same episode. She looks radiantly stunning in her picture. (A picture you can see after the jump!)
