Pop-Up Video, Parnell, & Polar Bears (Titling this post is difficult!)

In this post, among other things, I share with you my new love for Tina Fey’s show 30 Rock, tell you who I once knew who was called by the name of a certain candy bar, and I vent about Internet pop up adds which are in no way as cool as VH1’s Pop-Up Video. (I wish they’d bring that back. Since they probably won’t I’m putting a YouTube video of one of the songs under the jump.)

Tina FeyI hopped on over to TV Guide tonight to see what all is going on there. I was soon greeted by two annoying ads - one that starts talking right away (my speakers would be off but I was listening to She & Him : Volume One), plugging a TV show, and the other a larger than it should be ad telling me to buy some album with old American Idol contestants on it, or something. I mean, I don’t read most pop-up ads and to my knowledge, my computer usually keeps them from me as that is the agreement I made with it.

Now, when the evil ads appear I tend to just search rapidly for the ‘x’ so I can close the annoying add. Although, as I’m sure you’ve noticed - companies are making it more and more difficult to locate a way to close the ad. They put it high, then low, make it hard to see, etc. Seriously, give me a break. (Or a Kit Kat. Aside: One of my parent’s friends had a little girl whose nickname was Kit Kat. But it became all she was called. It was adorable when she was 2 years old. I wonder if she still goes by it.)

When I finally made it to my destination I threw a party with Mint Milanos (Karen Walker of Will & Grace would be so proud). I wanted to check out what the site was giving ‘cheers and jeers’ to. Would I be cheering and jeering right along? Oh- - - suspense!

There was a big jeer for the latest episode of Lost where we heard a dial tone from a cell phone. Ha! I hadn’t even realized that. Did they drop the ball here cause they have big issues like time travel to contend with, or is there some deeper, seedy reason for the dial tone? And does it involve polar bears and peanut butter?

There was a cheer for Chris Parnell on the new show Miss Guided. I saw two episodes of this show and I gotta say, I don’t plan to see anymore. The show is named much too ironically, which is sad. But Chris Parnell’s character, Bruce Terry, is a highlight. I’ve finally watched the entirety of 30 Rock season one (30 Rock - Season 1) and I love Chris Parnell’s character on the show, Mr. Spaceman (you say it like ‘Spuch-em-un’). I don’t know why I hadn’t already been watching this show, Tina Fey is amazing in a way that ‘amazing’ just isn’t prepared to cover.

  1. My favorites are the horrible ads that sit peaceably in the margins until I accidentally mouseover them on my way somewhere else - and the ad swells up and takes over the whole window and blocks out whatever I was reading! And half the time there’s no x to click so I just have to sit on my hands and wait for the damn thing to close and vow never to buy whatever brand is now burned into my eyeballs.

  2. Oh - I hate the way you accidentally do that. And if you’re like me - you do it, and do it again because it’s hard to not accidentally have your mouse hover ‘there’. Very annoying.
