Real Gossip Girl Style

On the show, Gossip Girl (a guilty-pleasure of every female under 40), Blake Lively plays Serena van der Woodsen. Serena is a Mary Sue. That is, a perfect character that is always blameless, no matter what. Did she crash a car, steal a diamond, and swear at the Pope? Psh, that’s totally fine!

As you might be able to tell, I find it a tad annoying. Then again, maybe I’m biased because I did happen to read a couple of the books. In the books Serena was no where near as perfect as this. (For that matter, she didn’t have a brother, and Blair wasn’t so evil. Oh, and Jenny has a crush on Nate – who is a total slacker/stoner. Read the books if you don’t believe me.)

NONETHELESS! Serena has nice style on the show. Let’s examine Lively’s style.

Her she is on the streets of NYC. This isn’t quite Serena’s style (and the makeup isn’t near screen-flawless) so we can tell right away this is a candid of her, not a scene from the show. And what do we think of Lively’s style? She seems to have a disheveled-prepster thing going on. I neither love it or hate it. The cutest accessory here is undoubtably her little pooch. Although, I really love that fashionable-yet-casual brown bag. As an avid bag connoisseur, I can tell you that the bag probably costs more than your rent. (Click on the photo to see a larger image.)

People seem to be a fan of Lively’s dress at the Tribeca Film Festival Chanel dinner. I have to say, I’m not. It’s not that it makes me cringe, it’s that it makes me wonder… why? Why, God, why? Did Lively look in the mirror before leaving for the event? I want to like this dress. But it seems like it’s trying too hard to be edgy and unique, and it does stand out, but not for the right reasons. The dress goes in too many different directions, and there are too many textures competing against each other. But, at the same time – I adore what’s happening south of her ankles (to steal a Sex and the City quote from Carrie Bradshaw), and her hair is playful – if not maybe a little too scraggly. Time to deep condition, Blake. (Click on the photo to see a larger image.)

  1. Hi! I LOVE Blake Lively’s style – she’s really become quite the glamorous style icon recently (did you see her at the Costume Institute Gala? In Paris? GORGEOUS!!)
    Actually, Serena DID have a brother in the books – he was older, attending Brown University. And Blair WAS so evil -just in a more mature, classy way (I feel like sometimes Blair comes off as an immature junior high girl in some of the scenes).

  2. Ah – you are so right, she had an older brother. I’m wondering if they’ll incorporate Blair’s older step-brother. I have a feeling they won’t.

    Blair has a flair for the dramatic, but I feel like they’re trying to make things too simple on the show – so Serena = Good, Blair = Bad. Where’s the gray?! Serena slept with Blair’s bf and the only one who was upset by that was Blair, and it seemed like people were mad at Blair for caring. I don’t know. I just feel some favoritism.

  3. i love blakes style on gossip girl and of the set i rekon their gorgusss clothes. sucha pretty chicky!

    blake= the best
