A Tribute to Sam Winchester : “Making His Nowhere Plans for Nobody”

I heard the song Nowhere Man by The Beatles the other night and it started me thinking about where we left off with Supernatural. We still have months to wait before we know what, for certain, is coming next. The season finale, No Rest For the Wicked, left us in a state of rueful despair. Of course, it makes for a damn fine story.

Since the show is renewed and there are really just two main actors - we can rationally assume that Dean will resurface in some capacity. Yet somehow, that doesn’t totally help. Because it’s sad. Did you see Dean? Sad! And Sam? Oh man. His heart was crushed. He had to go into this thinking Dean would be saved. Then it didn’t happen. If I were him, I’d hate the world. And then, I might decide to give the world a reason to hate me.

There is another option, though.

It’s this: To wake every day and just wait until sleep will claim you again, giving you a temporary release from the pain of life. (I didn’t say it was preferable.)

Now, I firmly believe that Sam will, at some point, be gung-ho about trying to save Dean and killing as many demons as he can (in a ruthless fashion). But for a heroic journey, there are always obstacles. I predict that at some point while Dean is gone Sam will be enormously disheartened. He’ll ignore his promises to his brother, and he’ll be deflated. He won’t care about anything - there will be no hope that he can even pretend to feel. The claws of depression (and then apathy) will sink into Sam and leave him immobilized. It will be a setback, to say the least. He may register the loss harder than we can even expect.

By the end of season four I believe we’ll have both of the Winchesters back, and through the trials of necessary angst and tremendous pain, there will be fast driving and impassioned singing in the Impala once again.

But until then, let’s experience this. Here’s to Dean, the loyal brother. And here’s to Sam, who is for now…our aimless and dejected nowhere man.

He’s a real nowhere Man,
Sitting in his Nowhere Land,
Making all his nowhere plans
for nobody.

He’s as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?

Nowhere man please listen,
you don’t know what your missin’
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command

  1. I’m going to cry now! What a great job you did! I love your posts. I think Supernatural had a contract for 4 years and next year is the last year. (If I’m not mistaken.)

  2. Taylor,

Supernatural’s actors are contracted for *five* years. Season Five, permitting it is renewed, will be the last year.

  3. so how many years left do we have? one or two? thanks for the correction too. :)

  4. One year is guaranteed. If the CW reknews it after this next year of shows, then we’ll have two years. :)
