Controlled Burn: The Closer Season Four Premiere
My love for Kyra Sedgwick’s hair continues as I have now gotten to see the season four premiere of The Closer. You can catch it yourself on TNT at 9 p.m. on Monday July 14th. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, who is the LAPD Deputy Police Chief with great intuition and interrogation techniques. Also, as I have mentioned, a woman with phenomenal hair!
The show creator, James Duff has this to say about the new season: “We are going to examine the issue, especially how much power we really have over our own lives. We live with the illusion that we are in control of our lives.” The surprise is, we have so little control it’s almost funny. Except, I’m not laughing! The season premiere is called Controlled Burn, and within it Brenda is agitated by her fiance, a reporter that has been granted the right to follow her around, an old enemy, and a case of arson.
The official synopsis is this: Griffith Park is a blazing inferno, threatening sections of Los Angeles, Glendale, Burbank and San Mateo. With four people dead and firefighters desperately trying to keep the flames at bay, the Priority Homicide Division is called in to begin an investigation. Things turn ugly when a nemesis of Brenda’s – pyromaniac Bill Croelick (from the Season 1 episode “Fatal Retraction”) – enters the scene. To make matters worse, a reporter has been attached to the squad as part of a PR campaign for the LAPD. On the home front, Fritz and Brenda have moved into a duplex, but the owner doesn’t allow pets. That doesn’t stop Brenda, however, from doing everything she can to keep Kitty under wraps, even if it means fighting with Fritz over the situation.
I found that, in her own feline way, Kitty proves to be integral to solving the case! The episode made me think about the idea that we’re never in as much control as we think we are in. The harder you try to get everything under control, the more things can spin into a wild mess.
I was happy to see Charmed alum Brian Krause get a cameo in this episode. There is a scene that made me especially squeamish, involving a glove. Brenda is a hilarious and complex character whom I very much enjoy watching. Brenda was drama and comedic at all the right moments, did manage to wear pink in the episode (of course!), and the entire episode kept twisting and turning to keep you guessing.
