Make Mine Music : Childhood Disney Memories on DVD and YouTube
The beauty of the Internet! Oh, I bask in it. Really and truly I do. You can type in vague memories of old books, movies and TV shows and find out ‘what was that one show with…’ When I do this (and I do it often) I feel an odd sense of relief, as though I’ve solved a puzzle in my life. Sometimes I wonder why my parents couldn’t have just written down the name of every book I ever read, movie I ever saw, park I ever visited - etc. And took photographs for each little thing to jog my memory, naturally. But well, I guess not everyone can be a Type A personality. And even they think my idea is crazy. Through the power of this method*, I discovered something I used to love…Disney’s movie Make Mine Music!

My favorite part of Make Mine Music was undeniably the All the Cats Join In part. “All the Cats Join In is one of two segments to which Benny Goodman contributed. An innovative shot in which a pencil draws the action as it is happening, and in which 1940s teens are swept away by popular music.” (IMDB)
There was also Casey at the Bat, The Martins and the Coys (controversial!), Peter and the Wolf, The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met, Johnnie Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnett, After You’ve Gone, Blue Bayou and Without You.

*My method is not scientific. But! I did finally find something else by typing in ‘cat book, friends with worm’. I knew it was a calico cat but that didn’t seem to help. And at first I was confusing the worm for a snake. Anyway, it’s from the collection of books based on Busytown by Richard Scarry! I was thinking of Huckle Cat and Lowly Worm! I can’t tell you how many times I would sit down and pour over every detail in the vividly colored and detailed quirky pictures in my big Busytown book. Mothers and Fathers everywhere - your child wants to know Huckle Cat and Lowly Worm!

Aaaand I found out the name of the My Little Pony movie I used to watch ENDLESSLY as a little girl (who was pony obsessed). It’s called Escape from Catrina. You know, 1985 was a great time for children’s cartoons. I feel sad for the youth of America and their cartoons these days. They just aren’t that good. It’s shameful!
