The Big List of TV Recommendations/Suggestions! (Plus, a Veronica Mars Movie?)

I am an avid TV fan. Some might say that I’m ‘obsessed’ (with a snotty tone!), but what do they know? I’m a fangirl, dammit! And certainly proud of that fact. I thought I’d go through my list of current shows and make a list as to why I recommend them. TV suggestions are of the good, right?

But first, I must bring your attention to the most amazingly amazing news of the week, in that Kristen Bell + Rob Thomas are ready to take Veronica Mars to that big ol’ screen at the multiplex. At least that’s what Michael Ausiello is telling us over on EW.com. Let’s hope this movie happens. Our poor hearts are fragile and easily broken!

Some of my current favorite shows include: Supernatural, House M.D., Bones, Heroes, The Office, Lost, Greek, Pushing Daisies, 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Gossip Girl, Chuck, Project Runway, Big Love, America’s Next Top Model, Lost, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Weeds, Doctor Who

Short descriptions/reason why I watch:

Supernatural: Two formerly-estranged brothers on THE classic Americana road trip. But – with pesky demons. Visually dark and creepy. Great classic rock music. I don’t know why you aren’t watching this already!

House M.D.: Snark, snark, and even more snark. A must-watch, and re-watch.

Bones: Two strong leads, but you’ll love every character. Cooler than The Bone Collector with Angelina Jolie. Interesting stories to investigate. Never dull. Gets you emotionally invested. Good balance of light/dark.

Heroes: Superheroes, but not in unitards.

I have over ten other suggestions, so click the ‘more’ link!

The Office: Hilarious, relatable, cute, will make you laugh out loud the way you always type ‘lol’ but never are actually ‘loling’. This will make an honest lol-er out of you.

Greek: Adorkable. Fuzzy. Warm. Sweet. Fun.

Pushing Daisies: For quirky romantics who like pretty things and pie.

30 Rock: Offbeat humor. Brings smiles! I want to be Tina Fey.

How I Met Your Mother: My generation’s version of Friends. Not appreciated as much as it should be.

Gossip Girl: Trashy fun. If playing in trash could be fun… erm? It’s like a bright and shiny Juicy Couture bag that you know isn’t your style but you want to buy anyway.

Chuck: Geek love + CIA agents. I can think of no two unique elements that are better fused together than in this show.

Project Runway: One of the few reality TV shows worth watching. Fashion is love. People may get catty, but at least we know they’re not morons. They’re talented, and snappy dressers.

Big Love: You think you’ll hate it when you first hear about the show, only you don’t. Addictive.

America’s Next Top Model: Can we say ‘guilty pleasure’? Ridiculous. Ridiculous. Ridiculous. To paraphrase a now infamous Twilight review: Watchers, you’ll hurl.

Lost: Mysterious. Innovative. Nothing like Gilligan’s Island. Which is actually a shame. But they make up for it with polar bears and…I’ve already said too much!

Secret Diary of a Call Girl: It’ll make you want to be a call girl even if you’re Amish. Don’t tell your parents that.

Weeds: The first time I saw this I’d written it off as not for me. But now I’m embracing the sheer awesomeness of this show! It’s orchestrated perfectly. Great plots, music, & genius, flawed characters.

Doctor Who: Yet another TV show I love that is Sci Fi, though I don’t like Sci Fi! You really have to give this show a solid effort. My sister watched ‘Christmas Invasion’ with me and kept saying she hated it until, literally, the last five minutes. And then she was hooked. And so am I. It’s so creative.

Other TV Suggestions:

Some of my past favorite shows include: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, Dead Like Me, Sex and the City, Angel, Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, Alias, Friends, Firefly, Party of Five, Wonderfalls, Arrested Development, My So-Called Life, Significant Others.

Notable mentions: Kath and Kim, Point Pleasant, Ally McBeal, Popular

This list is only current as of August 26th, 2008. It will expand as long as I am legally alive and have access to a working TV.

  1. A VM MOVIE? I must be dreaming. Am I dreaming? Pinch me. It’s too good to be true.

  2. omg!! Big Love is so addictive..I totally hated the sound of it…I just got the second season DVD so I can watch them back to back…because I love that show soooo much! And Gossip Girl…I watch it because it is so trashy…and I may know Blake and Chace… :)

  3. Kerstin – Rumor has it you smelled good today :P And yea, the movie would be the best thing EVAR. I need it to happen. :D

Taylor – I remember you saying you liked Big Love, too. That is awesome you now have season two. It’s a great season. Re: Gossip Girl – I’m interested to see how the ‘new’ 90210 (way lamer!) fares against Gossip Girl. Will people watch it? It’s on the same network so it’s not like I think there will be time feuds. But I just wonder if the shows will have shared fans or people who distinctly like one or the other. To be honest, I always thought that The O.C. was an updated contemporary 90210, and I don’t see the need for this show. I don’t plan to watch it unless as a joke. But I don’t expect for it to be good. ET was all ‘it will be a fantasy world of parties and designer wear, pushing boundaries’ – that sounds pretty much like lots of shows, especially GG! Okay, sorry – no more ranting!

  4. Jessica…There isn’t a season 3 yet is there? We still just have season 1 here in Canada.

While I was growing up in high school BH90210 was on and I watched it every week. I actually don’t even plan to watch the new one. It will probably be just like the NKOTB reunion, it should have stayed in the past. LEt me know how it is…we have pretty much the same tastes.. :)

  5. Oh, those poor New Kids on the Block. I remember they had an animated series on Saturday mornings that I used to watch sometimes. LoL.

I had to check about season three of Big Love because I wasn’t sure and I did want to know, too. Wikipedia says: The third season of Big Love will premiere on January 11, 2009

I also found this: In Canada, The Movie Network airs this series day-and-date with HBO in the U.S.Mondays at 10:00pm (ET) (The Movie Network)Thursdays on Global (check local listings)

    Maybe that’ll be helpful?

  6. I know Movie Central has Big Love running everyday and probably in season 2 but it’s not where I am on season 1, which they just started showing on Showcase. That’s why I am just going to start with season 2 when showcase starts airing it. :) Thank goodness for ebay!

  7. I hear ya – ebay is where I bought my Dead Like Me season one on DVD :) Of course, now it is missing! Along with season two. Grrr.

  8. I bought season one and two of Supernatural on there. :) I was so happy to get them. And before you started talking about it I never even thought of doing it that way. But, now I’ll be collecting DVD’s of my favorite show…

  9. I dispense worldly, wonderful news. Yes! :D

  10. You sure do…you talked me into starting to buy the DVD seasons…I have never thought of that before. And now I have already watched the pilot episode of Supernatural and falling in love with Dean all over again. Yes, I do listen to you Jessica!! YAY!!

  11. OMG…LOL at your author information…what cute shoes are you wearing today?

  12. Uh oh, you’re gonna listen to me and do what I say? THAT could be dangerous. :P I’m afraid of my own powers, Sam (SPN) is!

  13. I do listen… LOL… I read your posts everyday!

  14. Omg, am I a sham? I’m in SOCKS (white!) at the moment! LoL. I put on really rich lotion and I wanted to soak in the moisture! But earlier I skipped outside in some burgundy-colored gladiator sandals. What about you?

  15. Hmmm…what am I wearing? Bare feet… :) I only own like two pairs of shoes. I spend my extra money on tattoos…LOL…I am working on a half sleeve right now. It’s a koi fish.

  16. Omg !!! – I love koi fish! I recently became very into them, and I almost got a stained glass thing for my window that was a koi fish. Hehe. They are very cool. But I don’t do tattoos – unless they are press on tattoos, in which case – I love them. :D

  17. This is my sixth one..but my biggest one. People all have their things…tattoos are mine. I kinda rebelled from my mom when I moved out west eight years ago..hee hee.

  18. Hey! I found your site via the Felicia Day interview and based on this list alone, we’re totally gonna be friends. You should start Battlestar Galactica (one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and that’s saying something) and if you haven’t picked up Freaks and Geeks on DVD, I highly recommend it. :D

  19. Hey Gretchen! I adore new, cool, friends. I’ve only scanned your blog’s front page as of yet but I dse references to Liz Lemon, a general hefty dose of wit, and a picture of Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Dr. H DVD’s! — AHHH. Best Christmas EVAR, or what?

I got my Chosen Collection and the Angel collection last Christmas :D But since I waited so long I have (almost) all of the episodes on good ol’ VHS, too. Obsessed? ‘Tch -yea!

I never saw Freaks and Geeks but I liked Undeclared which I always associate with it. I’m not into sci fi that much, though I love Firefly and like Heroes… I was pondering starting Doctor Who or Farscape. Is BSG is better than those?
