I’m Loving “Oscar Wilde” by Company of Thieves

Company of Thieves

The band Company of Thieves has released a new Rushmore-inspired video for their single “Oscar Wilde” off their debut album Ordinary Riches, released on Wind-Up Records. I’d never heard this band before, and the sound is something that straddles the line between being uplifting and energy-inducing as well as deliciously mellow.

The video for Oscar Wilde was inspired by the character of Max Fischer from the Wes Anderson movie Rushmore. Fischer is involved in so many extra-curricular activities that he ends up flunking out of school. Over 60 props (mostly from vintage stores) are in this video. Try counting!

“We’re influenced by a lot of different artists,” says Company of Thieves singer Genevieve Schatz. “Everything from jazz and Motown to Billie Holiday and the Beatles… It’s like when you read a really good novel and you end up thinking like that character, or in that writer’s style.”

In fact, “That’s where the band’s name comes from,” guitarist Marc Walloch says. “We’ve taken what we know and put our own twist on it. It’s a kind of ‘thievery,’ but it’s all about paying our respects to what we were inspired by.” And let’s be honest – we’re all stealing from someone else. It’s the smart people who recognize this, and have that awareness.

Oscar Wilde serves as an inspiration for a song title as well as the album title. In Wildes’ essay The Soul of Man under Socialism you can find the following quote: “Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.”

I recommend listening to their Myspace and looking at these amazing vintage-esqe pictures.

  1. Not only is their music great (thanks for the rec!), but the concept for that video is brilliant.
