Who are YOU Quoting Today? The 16 Greatest TV Catchphrases
TVGuide.com has generously compliled the 16 Greatest TV Catchphrases. From their list, here are my five (okay, six) favorites:
16. “Eat my shorts!”
Who says it: Bart Simpson, The Simpsons
Why we love it: It’s to the point, insulting, and irreverent, just like the show at its best.
I say: I’ve never found an occasion to say this, but it’s memorable. And someday, someday I’ll find a way to sneak it into my everyday vocabulary. And then I’ll have accomplished one of my greatest goals!
14. “How rude!”
Who says it: Stephanie Tanner, Full House
Why we love it: This one is all about the delivery. Taken on its own, it’s little more than just another middle child whining. But with Stephanie’s pursed lips, raised eyebrows and “harumph” attitude, it becomes instantly memorable.
I say: Now this I can never forget, even the exact inflection of it. This and that damn Mr. Bear really gave Stephanie a one-up on the other two sisters. She had class, dammit.
13. “Make it work!”
Who says it: Tim Gunn, Project Runway
Why we love it: Because Tim Gunn is the man, that’s why. Carry on.
I say: Tim Gunn is classy. I kind of love him. He seems very comforting, even when he’s being stern – like some wise paternal dude who really just wants to help you, but how can he help you when you won’t even help yourself by taking out the box pleats on that skirt?! You know what I mean.
11. “That’s what she said.”
Who says it: Michael Scott, The Office
Why we love it: Sure, the writers of The Office didn’t invent this versatile zinger, but we can thank them for making it OK to use it in our own office. You know, because we’re 13-year-olds at heart, just like Michael.
I say: Oh hell yes, THE OFFICE is only like my obsession. Michael owns this phrase. And like he admitted to Jim once, even he doesn’t even know what it ‘means’ or how it ‘fits’ for every occasion, he just says it. And I hope he never stops. In fact, let’s petition it to be the last thing we hear on the finale of The Office!
9. “Legen- — wait for it — -dary”
Who says it: Barney Stinson, How I Met Your Mother
Why we love it: We just can’t get enough of Barney’s awesomeness. His blustery bravado hits at a universal truth: You either know a Barney or are a Barney. Check yo’ self, people.
I say: Technically he only said it in this ‘way’ once, but I can’t argue with Barney. He knows too much. Suit up.
1. “How you doin’?”
Who says it: Joey Tribbiani, Friends
Why we love it: Matt Leblanc’s dirty-dirty reading of the simple line gave it life, while forging a new comic frontier for the played-out playa character. Plus, it works! Try it.
I say: The show may be over, but long will this line live on!

I love How you doin’ too. Everyone has worked a way to include that into almost every conversation they have.
