My Supernatural “Lucifer Rising” Review

Alright, so very, very technically Lucifer wasn’t in the Supernatural season four season finale. Although, I will note dutifully that he was seen arriving at the very end of Lucifer Rising, and we saw him talking through a Nun (as a creepy vessel) back in the 70’s. So we got a small taste. Not that I want a taste of evil! But if we’re gonna go there, I’m ready to go there! We’ve only got one season of Supernatural left. (I’m already crying and clutching the season one DVD!)

So, let’s talk Ruby. Something that bugs me the most is that I cannot tell if the writers initially intended Ruby to be evil from the beginning, back when she was portrayed by Katie Cassidy. I think people wildly rejected the portrayal by actress Genevieve Cortese, and I was one of those people. But to change an entire character’s purpose bothers me because it doesn’t feel real anymore – just convenient.

Sam and Ruby

Sam and Ruby: Being bad

Then again, maybe I should just give props to Ruby for being so good of an actress. But I think we should have seen more to give us reason to be suspect of Ruby being on the bad side. I’m glad to be rid of her now, though. (Spoiler alert: Dean killed Ruby while Sam held her in place. Oh, and Sam killed Lilith. Demons were dyin’, people!)

What can we say about the angels? I don’t know why, but I really wanted Anna Milton (Julie McNiven) to show up! I know I didn’t like her earlier this season, but I changed my mind. Hopefully she’s signed on for the fifth season of Supernatural. I know that Castiel’s actor(Misha Collins)  is.

Where's their halo's?

Where's their halo's?

Should we have guessed that there were more bad angels lurking about than just Uriel? Apparently so. At least Castiel didn’t let us down in the end, although he almost did. For an angel, Castiel doesn’t always inspire tons of faith.

We did not get any real Sam. Vs. Dean in this episode – there was no big showdown. Possibly we’ll get this next year. This felt very anticlimactic, though. I liked that they did reference that Daddy Winchester had once told Dean that he would have to possibly kill Sam. Not that Dean could or would ever. I just don’t believe it. He’d rather kill himself, or die for Sam.

Dean and Sam were both screwed over (by the bad guys and the good guys, respectively) and now I think their bond will be even stronger as they work together to send Lucifer back to his hellish confines. After all, the boys were kept apart for almost the entirety of this episode for a reason – because they’re weaker that way. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are giving us just one more season to squee and gasp. Are you ready?

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. Although, I don’t know if I’d say it’s my favorite of the Supernatural season finale’s.

Dean Winchester can't be bought.

Dean Winchester can't be bought.

Questions I’m left with after the Supernatural season finale:

Will Dean swearing an oath to help the angels come back to haunt him?

Will we see more of the prophet? I like him!

Will Jo Harvelle (Alona Tal) ever come back, even for a cameo? Come on people, I love her! She’s one of the people in the boy’s past that isn’t dead!

Sam’s eyes turned black like a demon’s when he killed Lilith…what does this mean?

We were told that God had left the building. Did he really? Or will we see/hear some of the G-man, along with Lucifer?

  1. I think Ruby was always evil, she even said she fooled everyone including the other Demons. They never explained why she was helping Sam and Dean until now. I like how they tied all the storylines together from all the seasons. I can’t think of any unsolved mysteries anymore.

  2. Hey. I wasnt so proud of this episode just because it wasnt what i had expected but it played like a true finale should. So no complaints there. I suspected Ruby since day one. I never liked her maybe just because I felt she was always in the way. But im glad shes done. Sams eyes turned black but it was right when he killed her and used up all of his power to kill her. Meaning hes powerless now. Hence the fail when he tried to kill ruby. Im eager to know whats gonna happen next

  3. He guys and gals . love the serie and had a question anybody knows when season 5 is starting? thnx

  4. John: It’s starting on September 10th!

Great reviews! This is the last in a couple I checked out today.

Some thoughts: I do think that Dean swearing to help the angels will come and haunt him, and since there is probably dissension within the angle ranks, it’s going to be interesting to see how that is going to pan out.

God has probably been kicked out of the building by the ‘rebellious’ angels, and it’s Anna’s group of angels, which Castiel will probably join, that will save the day – with of course the help of the boys.

    And no, I don’t think Castiel’s dead :P

I’m having a SPN countdown, a post a day until September 10th, feel free to drop a line!

  5. Ten days on your countdown, I’m excited! I am so excited that Alona Tal is coming back! Not sure about the brunette in the promo pictures…rawr!

  6. Did you see the newly released scene from the season premiere??? It’s on YouTube – if you don’t find it, email me!

  7. Hey Sahar, I saw it – it is very exciting :D
