SofaChip’s Advance Review of the HawthoRNe Pilot
HawthoRNe is the new TNT series that stars Jada Pinkett Smith as nurse Christina Hawthorne. You’ll be able to view this series when HawthoRNe premieres on Tuesday, June 16th at 9 p.m. But if you’re interested in getting a sneak peak – read on!
Christina Hawthorne is the Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital. She’s what your Grandma might affectionately refer to as ‘one tough cookie’. Endlessly compassionate – though not someone you’d want to mess with – Nurse Hawthorne is someone you’d want on your side. She’s very likable, although I have a feeling that as the series progresses I won’t always side with her riskier decisions.
I especially enjoyed the dynamic between Hawthorne and her daughter, Camille (Hannah Hodson). Adding to the cast is Michael Vartan as the by-the-books, candy-loving, Chief of Surgery aka Dr. Tom Wakefield.
The premiere episode of HawthoRNe drops us into the one year anniversary of the death of Christina’s husband. Needless to say, there is a lot of emotion and angst surrounding our main character when we meet her.
As if that weren’t enough to manage, Christina still has her tireless (though hopefully rewarding) job responsibilities. I’m not sure that I could handle the amount of stress that those in the medical professions face on a daily basis. Especially when it comes to the stress heaped on a nurse – yowza! While the show illustrates that there are less-hectic moments, it also does a solid job of showing you that fast-paced world of life-saving that we expect medical dramas to deliver.
A lot of the show (if the pilot is any indication) will deal with the divide between nurses and doctors. Nurses are wildly unappreciated, so I’m glad that this particular medical drama will focus on them. The appeal for the show is that we’ll get to see the backstage tension of Nurses v. Doctors that may very well mimic real hospitals.
I truly think you will enjoy getting to know this cast of characters. So, make room for this show in your TV schedule and see some of the finest acting talent in the business do what they do best: get you to feel.
