Unconscious Rivals : Blair and Serena

Through random Wikipedia searching I stumbled upon the artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema. His painting entitled Unconscious Rivals reminds me of Blair and Serena of Gossip Girl. I’ve given up on the show as it doesn’t hold my interest. But that didn’t stop me from making the association. Pop culture runs in my veins, as does Diet Coke.

Blair would be the refined-looking seated girl in the mauve dress. TV Blair has better posture than this, of course. Next, take note of the way she holds her fingers to her chin - she’s clearly plotting! Evil things, no doubt. And while she’s holding hands with the other girl, it looks more like she’s ready to push her over the ledge than anything else. That other girl is our ‘Serena’ - and she looks inhibited, free-spirited, and very carefree.They’re friends, at least until the next drama arises.

The CW seems to have resorted to only wanting new shows about privileged, rich kids (see: 90210, Privileged). These unrealistic depictions show teenagers who never want for the new Coach bag, have personal trainers that also train celebs like Heidi Klum, and will never have to enlist the help of Amerisave mortgage co, or Bluefly.com since they use bags of money as throw pillows (and throw pillows themselves are actually often very expensive - I wish I wasn’t obsessed with the fluffy pillowy cutenesss that they are).

I did (albeit, accidentally) give Valentine another chance. Now that I’ve seen three episodes it’s grown on me the way an annoying co-worker that talks only of their cat can suddenly seem endearing.

6. Worst-Written Exit: When Dr. Hahn finds out about the whole Izzy-Denny heart-stealing scandal on Grey’s Anatomy, she tells Callie she’s going to report it to a higher authority. But despite how much Callie hated Izzy from her George days, she sticks up for her fellow doctor. And apparently Callie’s loyalty to Izzy leaves Hahn storming away after some harsh comments.

I haven’t watched Grey’s Anatomy in forever and a year, but I somehow wound up seeing the end of the show, which was this exact scene. I realized that Izzy has really great hair - and that the long bob is the new ‘Rachel’. It’s also nice to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan again. (Hiii, cutie McCute.) Dr. Hahn seemed rather cranky so it’s probably good that she’s hitting the road.

5. Best Moment of Unity: In a debate not-quite moderated by Oprah, 30 Rock’s Tracy Jordan and Jenna Malone argue over who has it worse in America: women or black men. Both cite Adrian Brody kissing Halle Berry as a flagrant example of men/whites thinking they can do whatever they want.

You guys - I’m gonna be honest here, which is hard since I try to spend my entire weekend swathed in lies and diamonds (see, that’s a lie) - I watched this episode TWICE. I loved the Halle Berry/Adrian Brody reference and dammit if I didn’t end up watching Oprah today because she was on 30 Rock last night. Next week with Jennifer Aniston looks ten shades of fabulous fun.

3. Most Confusing Exit: The Hills’ Heidi gets fired from Bolthouse Productions, but can you really get fired from a job you probably only had for TV in the first place? Looks like she’ll have to make her singing career her day job.

HA! *Snerk* Yea. Montag NEVER would have even been hired if she hadn’t been on The Hills. Not to mention all of the quick undeserving promotions she got to keep her happy. I guess Botlhouse realized it was a lot of PR for them, but BAD PR. I was very glad when Elodie screwed Montag over in that one episode. I guess I can’t stop admitting how much of this stupid show I’ve watched… Uh, anyway! What I realize about The Hills is that it’s like constant self-analyzing and therapy sessions. So…when is Dr. Phil’s cameo? I nominate him to call the girls on their BS and end the nonsense.

I don’t know how or why some people are still undecided about this election, ’cause WHAT are you waiting for exactly- a lightening bolt to hit? Fair enough! Well. For people who are still unsure, PinkSheepOfTheFamily.com has a great post about Five Reasons to Vote for Barack Obama. Let’s not screw our country over this time, mmkay? The thing is, I possibly wouldn’t even be SO against McCain if Palin wasn’t his VP. Which is all sorts of ironic sense I believe he picked a woman to steal the ‘Hilary’ voters aka lots of women. I’m a woman. But, with a brain.

And because I can, I’m going to segue into mentioning the MTV show Paris Hilton’s My New BFF which you can watch online on MTV.com. Only - DON’T. I finally watched the first episode (well, they tricked me - it was two put together I think). As much as I’m ready to admit that Paris Hilton isn’t so evil, this show isn’t good. The contestants are all so annoying and vapid, that it actually made me feel ill. I feel embaressed for them all, and sad that Paris is supposed to pick someone from this group. I think there was one nice girl, but they never pick the NICE girl - she’s just a gimmick to show a ‘range’. In conclusion, Paris Hilton’s My New BFF is VERY VERY BAD. The only thing I liked? The silly little theme song snippet that comes on after commercials which reminded me of a cheesy show Daria would have watched.

Kate Beckinsale - when does she not look amazing? Never. So that’s why I’m posting a picture of her! It’s from the Stars 2008 Benefit Gala.

I get cynical like anyone else does. Sometimes it’s shockingly easy to believe the world is ‘out to get you’, and everyone is laughing at you from behind their seemingly impartial eyes. The world, and all of the other people in this world, end up becoming our enemy. We like our friends and family (well, maybe not all of our family…) because we know them, they’re familiar and human. They’re all fundamentally flawed, just like us. It’s the ‘others’ we aren’t so sure about…

I’ve found that our personal space bubbles keep expanding, and we wear sunglasses often less for fashion and more to avoid making eye contact. We don’t want hassles, and we’re positively terrified of being found out for being so damn human (read: imperfect). You never want to be caught in the midst of an unscheduled moment of life. Smooth that hair, sip that Starbucks - you aren’t looking at anyone else. More often than not, no one is looking at you either. No one is looking at anyone else. We’re mirrors that don’t catch reflections.

I am thinking about this after reading an interview with Brian Cotlove of PostSecretFrance. (You can read the entire interview on MySpace.) I want to point out one of his answers:

A: Absolutely. It has definitely made me less cynical about the world and the people in it. All those thousands of faces that walk by us each day and we don’t even think about being actual, real, thinking, feeling people. If you’re a devoted Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, then probably you know what I’m thinking of now. It’s the exchange that young, teen Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) has with Jonathan in season three’s controversial episode Earshot. If you’re not a Buffy fan, you’re probably rolling your eyes. But read it anyway. (It’s listed as one of the top ten best monologues on the show, according to Slayage.com - a link I found via Whedonesque.) You might be surprised by the poignant universal message found in a ‘teen vampire show’. Then again, if you’re a fan of the show, that’s certainly no surprise to you.

The Scene:

[Buffy finds Jonathan in the clock tower with a rifle.]
Jonathan: Go away!
Buffy: Never gonna happen.
Jonathan: You think I won’t use this?
Buffy: I don’t know, Jonathan. I just –
Jonathan: Stop doing that!
Buffy: Doing what?
Jonathan: Stop saying my name like we’re friends! We’re not friends! You all think I’m an idiot! A short idiot!
Buffy: I don’t. I don’t think about you much at all. Nobody here really does. Bugs you, doesn’t it? You have all this pain and all these feelings, and nobody’s really paying attention?

Every single person down there is ignoring your pain because they’re too busy with their own. The beautiful ones. The popular ones. The guys that pick on you. Everyone. If you could hear what they were feeling. The loneliness. The confusion. It looks quiet down there. It’s not. It’s deafening… You know, I could’ve taken that by now.

Not only is the necklace cool, but it also seems like something her character on Heroes, Miss Elle Bishop, would wear. Now, she wouldn’t wear it just because it was pretty - but for some sort of superhero reason. It looks like it could be an amulet of power, yea? It reminds me of the mark in the girls eye on Point Pleasant, or something from Roswell.

Because I think Kristen should be in EVERYTHING, and I want to ask (read: DEMAND answers as to -) why wasn’t she in both of those shows? Psh. Elizabeth Harnois (resident blonde on Point Pleasant) and Katherine Heigl (resident blonde on Roswell) are fine and all, but KBell wins. Biased? Uhh…yeeaaah.

The Return of Jezebel James

Did you know that The Return of Jezebel James was canceled after THREE episodes last season? Um, did you even know it ever aired? Well, with the lack of promos and buzz (despite major names attached like Parker Posey, Lauren Ambrose, and Amy Sherman-Palladino) I’m not surprised. But I discovered it’s on Hulu.com (LOVE this site) and I’ve been watching the episodes that are available.

If you liked Gilmore Girls, I think you’ll like this. It’s a sitcom and therefore different, but the writing is strong, smart and witty. The acting is good… but it’s hard for me to view the characters as a lot more than extensions of Lorelai Gilmore, Rory Gilmore, Emily Gilmore, Kirk, Luke Danes...it seems like their essences switch around to these different characters. Which isn’t a bad thing necessarily. But with the cancellation, it’s a moot point. There wasn’t time to develop the characters, and to be fair - I was probably LOOKING for the similarities since I was such a huge fan of GG.

By episode 5 I was loving the show a little less, but that episode never even GOT TO AIR. Sigh. I’ve heard rumors that Parker Posey really didn’t like this job because of the timeline, which may have contributed to how much the show was buzzed to be a big thing. (Amy Sherman-Palladino, what are you doing now? I’m ready for more of your brilliance!)

Gilmore Girls alum like Scott Cohen (Max Medina) and Rose Abdoo (Gypsy) appeared, and this made me squee. Check out The Return of Jezebel James on Hulu.com. If you want more of the original and endearingly banterific (not a word, noted) Gilmore Girls (and who doesn’t), you can watch it on the newly released website The WB.com. I tried to watch some of Laguna Beach since I’ve found The Hills to be the perfect superficial guilty pleasure. But Laguna Beach redefines ‘bad’. And Lauren “LC” Conrad doesn’t have her perfectly curled hair, so it’s just a total waste of time!

Speaking of superficial guilty pleasures, I TRIED to watch and enjoy The Rachel Zoe Project. It was an epic FAIL. That show is horrible. Steer clear at all costs! This has nothing to do with the talents of Rachel Zoe and her assistants. But as a show? It was a giant headache of fighting and it seemed…ugly. Even Chanel can’t hide ugly like that. Just say no.

And finally, I will admit that I have finally watched some of the original 90210 and have acquired a massive crush on Luke Perry. Excuse me, I have to go buy some old issues of Tiger Beat on eBay.

I had misplaced my love for Pushing Daisies over the summer. I’ve redeemed myself now. I am so glad that I tuned in last Wednesday to see the season opener, “Bzzzzzzz!” (Public Service Announcement: Remember, only you can prevent bad TV-watching decisions.) This show is a mixture of beauty, fairytale elements, striking colors, romance, comedy, singing, mystery, quirks, pies, and bee appreciation (which there is never enough of in life). This show airs on ABC at 8 p.m., so next Wednesday do yourself a favor and tune in for the charm.

On Wikipedia (I should really add that word to my spellcheck someday) I discovered something I hadn’t realized: In “Bzzzzzzz!” Ned says he’s a temp from Happy Time Temporary Services. This is the temp agency that George works at in Bryan Fuller’s Dead Like Me.
