Dear Hayden,

I really wish you hadn’t cut your hair, but you’re still ten shades of awesome. I mean it. But let’s talk fashion. The theme I have is: You Can Do Better Than That. Listen, your outfit here isn’t ugly or horrible or anything, but it isn’t the most flattering thing you’ve ever worn. You’re a young starlet! Don’t you want to dress for your age? You wear a lot of mature frocks, and one might speculate this is because you’re dating an older boy.

Well, he’s Milo Ventimiglia. Believe me, If I could steal him, I WOULD. But Milo isn’t going to think less of you if you dress differently. (He’s a nice guy, or so I heard from my neighbor’s best friend who dated this girl who saw Milo picking up a piece of trash on the street one time on New Years Eve. Of course, the girl was drunk and it could have been anyone, or even a very large raccoon… But I stand by my statement.)

In your recent campaign with Jessica Alba for Declare Yourself you were in a really cute shocking pink dress. It was more age appropriate, cute, and fun. The thing is that right after I saw the above picture of you, I saw the below picture…

You won’t get the full power of this dress unless you click to enlarge. It’s really kind of, um, ugly? (And that’s being generous.) But what occurs to me is that Sharon Stone is dressing more like I’d think YOU would, Hayden. Stone has a nice figure and your stylist deserves endless brownie points for not making you wear something ugly like that. BUT! You should wear something more along these TYPE OF lines. Am I making sense?

Since the leopard dress is icky, I decided to see what other dresses you would be cute in. Essentially, I made you into a paper doll. You may remember me doing that once with Mary-Kate Olsen (click the tag below to find that piece). And we had fun doing that. So here we go:

House is rockin'

Last week an episode of House M.D. (a repeat, yes) was on. I was in the same room with my Dad, and our conversation came to this revelation:

Me: *In a thoroughly shocked tone* “Well yea, Wilson is House’s friend. His only friend, really. And it’s a weird friendship.”

Dad: “I didn’t think House had any friends.”

My Dad has actually seen House M.D. more than just a few times, but mostly it’s been just snippets of episodes (he’s a terminal channel-changer). Can we blame him for not realizing that Wilson and House are BFF? I thought it was interesting on HouseisRight.com that Lynn mentions the friendship House had with Wilson and then says ‘if you can call it that’.

Can we call it a friendship? Was it a friendship? Does tolerating someone make them a default friend? But did they simply tolerate each other? (“He had that smug look on his face when he’s that pleased about something, he’s got to tell somebody and the only somebody he knows is you.” - Stacy to Wilson) Wilson is always great to verbally spar alongside. So it’s not as though House just picked a random person. Wilson might like someone who calls him on his crap, instead of not seeing through his ‘nice, normal’ facade. I think they were friends, in a very twisted sort of way. But with House, isn’t everything twisted?

Often, they say that we despise in others what we hate about ourselves. But in the House/Wilson friendship, I’m not so sure that holds true. House once said to Wilson, “You love everybody. That’s your pathology.” We certainly can’t accuse House of harboring too much love for people. Then again, does Wilson really love people? Or does he have a compulsive need to serve them in the same way that House has a compulsive need to fix them (not to fix the person, but to solve the puzzle).

The collective ‘they’ have also said before that we go for opposites in our friendships and relationships. House is the one who points out, “I’m a night owl. Wilson’s an early bird. We’re different species.”

So, let me know what you think. House and Wilson, were they true friends? Is their friendship over now? Will they reconnect? Is it weird that normally we care about romantic relationships but in this case, it’s a simple friendship that has us asking all these questions? (I don’t think it’s weird, it’s just good storytelling!)

A patient (asking Wilson about House): “Does he care about you?”

Wilson: “As Dr. House likes to say, ‘Everybody lies.’”

Dawson Leery: Filmmaker!

Other features include a video encoder, sound effects generator, MOV encoder, and data burning capabilities (save your screenplays or emo poetry). That’s the tip of the iceberg, as it does tons of things. The coolest thing, to me, is the ability to impart a bazillion (well, over 30) different effects on videos, plus altering colors, cropping, rotating, and all other sorts of fun stuff.

And if you aren’t into making fanvids for the epic love that is Buffy and Angel (or Buffy and Spike - but never Buffy and Riley - mwahaha), make vidoes of your family, pets, or even make a mini movie. I always wanted to be all Dawson Leery (Dawson’s Creek) and do that. Then you can use this program to burn the video and host a movie night with your own movie. Pretty cool. One thing is for sure, this DVD software was created to be super user-friendly in design, and there’s online help for those who are like me, and easily confused by technology. (We mustn’t be ashamed, stand strong!)

I didn’t give you much of a chance. You see, our schedules never quite added up right. As flimsy excuses go, I know that’s a weak one. Honestly, when I saw you - I was interested. I thought you looked like someone I knew in high school but never had classes with so I never bothered to talk to. Now that you’re gone, maybe we can reconcile over Netflix. As for this CL.org ad, I can only imagine this is what Buffy or Willow (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) would have thought if they’d come across this. Although, admittedly, Willow is more likely the one to go online and find something like this by accident. Perhaps while she was writing some Doogie Houser fanfic? I like to think she’d share this with Buffy and they’d get a good laugh from it. They both know that being a vampire can, well, seriously suck.

If you’re a fan of Heroes then you know Kristen Bell as the sociopathic-yet-still-lovable Elle Bishop. TVGuide.com has an interesting piece on what we can expect for Heroes season three. You can read that here. Heroes is going to be having a three-hour series opener. The first hour will be a Q&A, but that’s still a lot even if you don’t watch the first hour. Then again - why wouldn’t you watch all three hours? Psh. I’ll be taping it! And to answer your next question, yes, I am seriously that old skool and I don’t have a stupid Tivo thing! Sadface. Sadfase. (Which spelling of that is cuter?)

ANYWAY! From the aforementioned article we learn that Elle Bishop will appear “in the second half of two hour premiere”. I want to see lots of Elle this season. I mean, not in a dirty way. You know what I mean.

KRISTEN BELL: The thing about pop culture for me is that I would so much rather be on a show that people are wildly obsessed with than on a show that people just turn on because it’s on prime-time television. A a performer and as a creative person on a TV show, you want people to invest in your project. You want people to love it, not just like it. And as far as the coolest fans ever, which are some of the ones I’ve run into - I mean, it can get really intense, I’m not going to lie. The one thing that is different about those kind of fans - because they are so invested - more times than not, when they see you, they dot* really know what to do with themselves. Its not just, “Oh, that’s a person I watch on a television show;” it’s, “That’s the person I follow and am deeply invested in:” There’s a lot of shaking and sweaty palms and tears, but it’s precious. They’re all kind of funny and bizarre, but at the same time they’re lovely, because they’re coming up to you because they support you.

Finally, I’ll leave you with this New York Times interview with the series creator, Tim Kring: here. He acknowledges that season two was the suck, and he is promising we’ll love season three. Okay, I believe you. I just can’t wait for it to begin.

I took note of things in certain episodes, and made a list. Devoted fans will (hopefully) be able to guess the episode by the list. Each item on the list by itself won’t do anything to help you. It is the cohesive bond between them that will hopefully spark your mind. I didn’t want to be too obvious, so I’ve possibly made this too hard… But that does give you an excuse to re-watch season three. And where’s the bad in that plan?

I will absolutely not (not!) be able to tell you now where I noted each occurrence unless I go back to watch an episode. So please don’t ask me ‘where was this part?’ with your puppy dog eyes because I will only be able to shrug and tell you that it’s there somewhere.

The answer shall be delivered in the next post about The Office. But if you guess I will indeed respond to tell if you are right or wrong. I might even give you hair advice, or a recipe for sweet potato pie. You never know.

As I continue my Supernatural season one DVD marathon I find myself looking up some creepy myths online - at night - alone. The night I was writing this particular post I had just added the above picture and was about done when all of the electricity went kaput for about five minutes in the entire area (I checked outside). Creepy coincidence? You tell me. I’ll be cuddling up to a blanket and watching my cat for odd behavior.

So, what was it that I was looking up online that was getting me freaked? The Witches Ball. If you Google for ‘The Witches Ball‘ you’ll come across an overwhelming variety of different sites. Places like Salem Massachusetts have Halloween parties which are given that name. That was exactly the sort of image that was first conjured in my mind with the phrase. I was picturing people dressed in pointy witch hats and gyrating to songs like ‘I’ve Put a Spell On You’. (And nooooww you’re mine! Muah - ha - ha!)

The deeper you look, there is something else that goes by the name The Witches Ball. It is, ironically enough, an actual ball of marble which serves at a tombstone in the Myrtle Hill Road Ohio cemetery. The local Ohio lore says that it marks the grave of an ‘evil witch‘ who was buried standing straight up with the marble ball over her so she couldn’t rise from the dead. Of course, there’s a completly contradictory story about the woman buried there being the murderer of her family. That seems to be a less popular theory.

I would love to see this explored on The CW’s Supernatural sometime. As you can already see, I found some YouTube videos which use The Witches Ball as the video subject. The first one has some neat video aging effects. But it’s the second video I really want to discuss.

It reminds me of the season three episode of Supernatural, entitled Ghostfacers. It was a great episode. But - it was showing inept ‘kids’ playing around at the job that Dean and Sam do.

The people who made this video are the Akron Paranormal Investigations team. It seems that they are more into things for the hype than anything serious. But I guess you’d start to get that picture when you hear the song they have, see the graphics, and note that they openly recruit volunteers (read: any bored teen who likes horror movies). What’s more, in the video where you see them exploring The Witches Ball, they have the ever so sweet song ‘Balls to the Wall‘ playing over and over. It’s touching, really.

I think that any real paranormal investigators take things much more seriously and don’t make a mockery of these types of supernatural forces. If you can believe that there are these types of forces, why are you encouraging people to traipse around and very potentially get hurt? I’m all for deepening a person’s look into the supernatural world to understand things if they so choose - but thinking it’s all party tricks seems like bad business. I think it goes without saying that these investigators are guys that Sam and Dean would laugh at in a minute. Hell, I could be wrong. But, then again…

If you work hard, you better play harder. That’s the message of Gretchen Wilson’s song.

I know I’ve been talking a LOT about the TNT TV show Saving Grace, but it’s got a lot going on for it right now! So, it would be in bad taste to not tell you all of the latest news, right? That brings us to the wonderful fact that Grammy winner (I won five! Or not - you guess) Gretchen Wilson has released a music video in association with Saving Grace. The song is appropriately called Work Hard, Play Harder. This fits in perfectly for the Saving Grace theme: Embrace Your Grace. Forget notions of devout nuns with bowed heads and silent demeanors. Nothing against nuns, but that’s not what this phrase is about.

I promised myself I wouldn’t say this unless I MEANT it, and I do: I don’t like most Country music (I liked that one Shania Twain CD for about a week), but I really do like this song. I mean, I’m just a 20-something girl who enjoys a catchy anthem about independence! And yea, I sing along. What about you?

I’m really going to put myself to the challenge of applying this theme song to my life today. Too often too many people are working themselves silly and then they hardly let themselves relax, or bask in the glow of their hard work. You have to appreciate yourselves. And not just for the big things, for the tiny things too. I got up super early this morning because I went to bed early with a migraine (the bane of my very existence!) So, today I’ve already walked the dog, fed the dog and kitten (she’s not a cat until one year has passed!), and had two big glasses of water.

You might especially be questioning the water thing, but I’m someone who does not even like water - despite hearing that it will cure 5,000 different things AND made your skin glow. But with a little crystal light and lots of ice, water isn’t all that bad. So whatever accomplishments you have today - don’t shrug them off as nothing. Everything has the possibility to become something extraordinary.

Except mullets. Just say ‘no’ to those.
