“I want them to be dumb!” That’s a nice soundbite from the latest episode of America’s Next Top Model. It was said by the new judge, Paulina Porizkova. She was being cheeky, but there’s truth in her statement.

How did this quote come about? Since it’s a guilty pleasure show and I was watching, I can tell you. Tyra was talking about how Katarzyna doesn’t let her eyes flirt with the camera. (Tip: Next time you take a picture, flirt with the camera and see how it looks. But don’t do this if the person behind the camera is your creepy Uncle Bob.) The judges pointed out that they can always see Katarzyna thinking and over-analyzing her moves, and it shows in the pictures she takes. Which doesn’t make for a stunning photograph. Hmm…I wonder how the compulsive, analytical thinker, Angela Chase (Claire Danes on My So-Called Life), ever took a good photo.

Their theory is that if a model is thinking, she won’t get any good photos. Ergo, they should be dumb. Of course, the alternative, which they’ve suggested to many girls, is that they should be thinking and have some thought in their eyes so it reads on the film. Just don’t be thinking something that makes you look worried (vent that out in therapy). You have to have inspiration to draw upon. Don’t let anyone see how hard you’re working in your head. With practice, things will come more naturally to you. And please, don’t ask me why I’m rattling off modeling advice. Listen, I’m not going to work with you until you learn to start smiling with your eyes! And can you even walk, or do you think glomping like a robot down a runway is going to be a new trend? *Throws champagne flute, stomps away*

As for the show - Katarzyna was eliminated. Whitney was saved. Anya had better win this thing. Anyone else know that her last name is Kop? Anya Kop! That is such a fun name. She should win just for that.

Cycle ten of America’s Next Top Model brought us an episode last night that has me loving Anya and loathing Whitney. Curious as to why?

So, we started out with fourteen girls, and now we have seven. I’ve never been so great at math, but I think that’s half down! So, it was time for the model’s to reflect. How did they feel?

Whitney voiced what I think a lot of fans are still thinking - they’re surprised Claire was eliminated. Lauren, our resident model underdog, said that she felt she really could be a model now. (This claim seems dubious when you watch her in action, though. She needs so much work in social situations, with her walk, etc…) Stacy-Ann said the competition now was FIERCE. That’s the lingo for any Top Model wannabe who has been schooled by Tyra Banks. Tyra has said that word more times on this show than anyone should say it in their entire life. Get.A.Thesaurus.

There was a whole drama with Fatima not having travel documents to leave the USA. She explained this to her fellow contestants. I don’t know what it is - but Fatima has mellowed and I like her now. Weird? Weird. Anya was supportive and nice, and Whitney looked pleased as a peach. I don’t know where that expression comes from, or how a peach can be pleased - but, whatever. She was damn happy.

Whitney has been giving more and more attitude and it’s not cool. I will go so far as to call it hellishly annoying. She has something negative to say about everyone, and whines about her plight as a plus-sized model. I’m not saying it’s easy for her or a girl in the modeling industry who isn’t a size two, but this record on repeat needs to get some sort of new perspective, or something. I think I lost my metaphor… But you know what I mean? Maybe it wouldn’t even bug me if she was a nice person who could exhibit more than bitterness towards everyone. Continued

So, here’s something embarrassing (this time not an anecdote about me, but the huge company Cover Girl). If you go to the page to vote for America’s Next Top Model Cover Girl of the week - there’s a little surprise for you. The have all of the remaining models there, plus two faces that shouldn’t be there. The first face is Claire’s - who was booted this week. I mean, she should be down but since I never bothered to go to this site before maybe they keep her up until the week after she’s booted. Making for hilarity since, if the most fan-loved girl is the one just sent packing, well, it’s irony working overtime. The really strange thing is that one of the girls up there is Kimberly, the blonde who was eliminated in the first round. So, there’s no excuse for her to be there. So, recently on ANTM my two former favorites were up on the chopping block: Claire and Lauren. Lauren stayed, Claire went. It was sad. I find myself gravitating towards liking Anya and Katarzyna more.

Miss Katarzyna has been in the background, holding strong and silent - involved in no drama. I think she’s a real contender. They cut her hair which I don’t love, but oh well. I almost feel like Tyra might not pick her to win because she can’t pronounce her name. By now, Tyra should be able to do that. It seems insulting. But Katarzyna does her best to be gracious and I can’t even tell if she’s annoyed or not. (I think I would be.)

More and more this show seems to disappointing. It’s a guilty pleasure still, but it’s just odd. The quality has mostly just - poofed. It’s not fun when it’s so sad.

One thing at the panel that stood out was how poorly dressed Dominique was. (Oh, and can we please give her the boot?!) The sad thing is she isn’t the only one who has been up there in clothing that made us or the judges go WTF? In honor of that, I’ve put a few pictures together of items that a top model should incorporate.

These are just examples, though. Any model or female should only wear clothing (unless modeling it) that is her personal style. Fashion is, of course, an extension of yourself - a way to show your personality.

Here’s an example of a girl whose personal style exudes ‘model’ to me, and she does that by mixing together old and new pieces of different price ranges. This picture, and femme (Agathe Bjørnsdatter), are from the blog StyleBytes.com, which Agathe writes. About this outfit, she says:

Dress: My stepmom´s old dress.
Jacket: Zara
Scarf: H&M
Bracelets: Gift
Clutch: Secondhand
Shoes: Zara

She looks wonderful and if I was having a runway show I’d book her. In this cycle, Lauren seems like the girl who could best pull off a look like this - except with Lauren’s unusual anger management issues surfacing…and the walk she does…*shrugs*

I feel glum. You always feel like a nap is a good idea, until you take one and then you wake up and you napped much longer than you meant to - and you feel disoriented and you can’t remember if you let the dog out before your nap so you run downstairs without your glasses, and can’t find your shoes , you trip on someone else’s shoes- and yea. Someone out there knows what I mean. I feel ya, sister/brother-friend.

Admittedly, I’m also not so stoked about the news that our own Dawn Summers (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) aka Michelle Trachtenberg will be on Gossip Girl. *Shrug* I guess you could say I’m not the biggest fan of it. *Mumbles inaudible things*

But I can’t deny that I have my own guilty pleasures (America’s Next Top Model). I think that a show like Dawson’s Creek (Dawson’s Creek - The Complete First Season) would be so much better than this, I mean - maybe even The O.C. (The O.C. - The Complete First Season) - but I digress.

The good of it is that she might make me want to watch, and she won’t be on the show forever. She’s been cast as the role of troublemaker Georgina Sparks, someone that Serena doesn’t like but knows from her past. (Probably not a pimp or a drug dealer, maybe she stole her Gucci sunglasses in boarding school?)

I’ll be glad to see Michelle back on TV. I missed her. I know we didn’t get off to the best start, I felt Buffy’s pain with the whole annoying little sister gig (raise your hand if you have two of them *hand raise*). But by season 7 of BTVS I liked Dawn. She has really pretty hair. So shiny.
