Hello my friends and welcome to EXHIBIT A! It is a promo picture for Gossip Girl. Look at them, all beautiful and perfectly coiffed. But there is something about this picture that bugs me. In fact, it tends to bug me in most every Gossip Girl promo picture I’ve ever seen!
Blair (the brunette, Leighton Meester) is never the star! Serena (Blake Lively) is always standing out in front of everyone else, even if not physically. I feel like the pictures say: Ensemble cast? What ensemble cast?! (In the book Serena and Blair are both the main female leads, unlike the show which is catering towards Serena. Ergo, my dismay!)
While this particular picture does show Blair center stage, something is still not right. Although Lively is to the side here, she’s standing out in a clean white cropped vest, with nude shoes and bright jeans that bring out her entire form. Meanwhile, Leighton Meester is in dark colors, almost blending into the fountain in the back!
Look at the picture - look! Your eye goes to the center, but then lingers to the right. Poor Jenny (Taylor Momsen) is providing a white color pull to that side, like a backdrop for Serena. I say, this just isn’t right!
Also not right? Whatever is working as Jenny’s tights. It looks like she pulled her nylons down and left them there. I never heard of that trend.
Of course, neither Blair or Serena look all that great in this picture:

Why, hello there - I’d greet you with a double kiss on each cheek since I’m so outrageously French these days, but we don’t want to miss the action. *Ushers you to your seats, a booming voice is then heard* And there they are! It’s some of the cast of The CW’s addictive TV show Gossip Girl! Only, I heard addictions were BAD, so I stay away - mostly. I once took a sacred vow…but it involves haunted carnivals and I just can’t get emotional right now… but I also made another vow. And that was that even if I don’t care about a show (or movie) I must always care about the fashion! That’s what’s really important. Not the writing, acting, or ratings. Just what the actresses wear to events like The CW’s upfronts in Manhatten.

Here we see two starlets: Blake Lively and Leighton Meester. There are rumors these two hate each other (I didn’t start them, honest). I have no clue. So either they’re both really happy for the success of the show, and to have made such nice friends in Hollywood…. Or Blake’s pinching Leighton’s hand while Leighton is jabbing Blake in the back. Are those happy smiles, or strained winces? You decide.
AND FOR THE PIECE D’RESISTANCE…

Gossip Girl star Blake Lively (Serena) was at The Met Costume Gala recently, and she is in an outfit that I both love and hate. Isn’t that so often the way? (Is there a fine line, or miles and miles?) I suppose the Ralph Lauren dress is appropriate for the function.
What strikes me the most is how much Lively looks like an old fashioned Barbie with this dress (I mean this affectionately). I actually had a vintage Barbie dress that looked eerily similar to this. Look, I found a picture of the Barbie outfit I had!
Also - Lively’s great figure as shown here is making me want to skip all carbs for at least a week. You don’t suppose there’s a girdle under that dress, do you? So unfair.

On the show, Gossip Girl (a guilty-pleasure of every female under 40), Blake Lively plays Serena van der Woodsen. Serena is a Mary Sue. That is, a perfect character that is always blameless, no matter what. Did she crash a car, steal a diamond, and swear at the Pope? Psh, that’s totally fine!

As you might be able to tell, I find it a tad annoying. Then again, maybe I’m biased because I did happen to read a couple of the books. In the books Serena was no where near as perfect as this. (For that matter, she didn’t have a brother, and Blair wasn’t so evil. Oh, and Jenny has a crush on Nate - who is a total slacker/stoner. Read the books if you don’t believe me.)
NONETHELESS! Serena has nice style on the show. Let’s examine Lively’s style.
Her she is on the streets of NYC. This isn’t quite Serena’s style (and the makeup isn’t near screen-flawless) so we can tell right away this is a candid of her, not a scene from the show. And what do we think of Lively’s style? She seems to have a disheveled-prepster thing going on. I neither love it or hate it. The cutest accessory here is undoubtably her little pooch. Although, I really love that fashionable-yet-casual brown bag. As an avid bag connoisseur, I can tell you that the bag probably costs more than your rent. (Click on the photo to see a larger image.)

People seem to be a fan of Lively’s dress at the Tribeca Film Festival Chanel dinner. I have to say, I’m not. It’s not that it makes me cringe, it’s that it makes me wonder… why? Why, God, why? Did Lively look in the mirror before leaving for the event? I want to like this dress. But it seems like it’s trying too hard to be edgy and unique, and it does stand out, but not for the right reasons. The dress goes in too many different directions, and there are too many textures competing against each other. But, at the same time - I adore what’s happening south of her ankles (to steal a Sex and the City quote from Carrie Bradshaw), and her hair is playful - if not maybe a little too scraggly. Time to deep condition, Blake. (Click on the photo to see a larger image.)

No, this doesn’t mean you’ll get to see Leighton Meister (Blair, on the show) without makeup, shouting at Blake Lively (Serena) to share the last of the Chance perfume.
People at TV Guide have found some interesting fliers being handed in New York - the Upper West Side, to be exact.

Apparently, the flier says this: “Are you the real Gossip Girl? Maybe an adorable Seth Cohen (The O.C.) prepster who hates TV? Either way, we’d love to chat with you. We’re looking for NYC prep-schoolers for a reality show [to air on] a major youth-oriented network.”
There’s really two major youth-oriented networks for teens: MTV and The CW. The CW already has the real show, but who knows? MTV had a reality show called Rich Girls which was basically this, but since this is trendy and they can slap another name on it - maybe it’s them.
Then again, with Jamie Lynn Spears pregnant, maybe Nickelodeon wants a new show to replace whatever she was on (Zoey 101, I checked).
