So You Think You Can Dance takes a dig at Dancing with the Stars (Dance off Time?!)

So You Think You Can Dance

I don’t think I’ve commented on a commercial on Sofachip yet before, but now I must. I simply must! Last night, bleary-eyed and ready for sleep, I heard a commercial that made me laugh. It was for So You Think You Can Dance, on FOX tv. Their spot went something like this: “No B-list Celebrities here!” That’s a dig at none other than ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

The question becomes very clear here: Would you rather watch semi-talented celebrities (to various degrees) dance, or unknown people dance awesomely? Seriously, I wanna know! Which would you recommend someone to watch?

The ratings might actually be interesting! If only they ran against each other!

Summer Glau of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” is a Pin-up Girl in Vanity Fair

I swear I’m not lazy, it’s just that Vanity Fair summarizes it best when they say: “Since 1992, (Vanity Fair’s) Vanities section has opened with a full-page portrait of a promising young star. In September 2006, we tweaked the format: the Vanities opener now features an up-and-coming actress in a 50s-style pin-up shot.”

For April 2008 the girl is Summer Glau. I really like the concept, and the picture is gorgeous in this way that makes you wish you didn’t mind wearing clear plastic raincoats. But you have to realize that on your own the look might be lacking, almost old-ladyish. Or if you’re a guy, it might look supremely odd (depending on your strut). One thing is clear, Summer looks very different to me in this picture.

Summer Glau

Of course, I’ve seen her mostly as the disheveled River in Firefly (Firefly - The Complete Series) and in the movie Serenity (Serenity Collector’s Edition). Now we’ve been seeing her on Fox as Cameron on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The later role requires her to look a lot more polished than our dear River, but even so, this pin-up picture looks so different in the face. I do wish she looked a bit more recognizable in the image, but I still like it.

By the by - those enviable sublime legs? Those are thanks to years of being a dancer. In fact, she’s been dancing since she was 12. Her focus was in ballet, but she can also tango and flamenco dance. Needless to say, pick her to be your partner in a dance competition. If she was ever on Dancing with the Stars, she’d win. But her career will hopefully never come to that.
River in Firefly

River Tam was a troubled girl. Although Summer is beautiful, they never played up her looks (aside from the natural beauty that broke through) as that wasn’t well-suited to her character at that time. You can see an example of this in the picture on the right. (It’s a screencap so it’s not the best quality ever, forgive me?)

In September 2007 the Vanities girl was Alexa Davalos. Alexa has a connection to Summer because they both worked on a Joss Whedon show. In fact, Summer was in an episode of Angel (Angel - Seasons 1-5 30-Disc DVD Set), and Alexa was in several episodes. But no, they were never in the same episode. She looks radiantly stunning in her picture. (A picture you can see after the jump!)

Paulina Porzikova has Replaced Twiggy as a Judge on America’s Next Top Model (so, let’s investigate!)

For Cycle Ten of America’s Next Top Model, there is a new face on the panel. The face is of Supermodel Paulina Porzikova. The judge that is no longer there is Twiggy.

Twiggy came on ANTM as a judge in 2005. The official statement is that Twiggy has left due to scheduling conflicts. But it is no secret that Twiggy was a kind-hearted judge with nary a bad thing (I have no idea why I’m typing with English jargon, sorry) to say about most girls. Even when she did, her tone was never too harsh. She seemed nurturing, but also a little bit Continued

The Fonz Wants to Dance! (Oprah talks with American Pop Culture Icons)

Oprah had three special guests on her show today: Rick Springfield, Henry Winkler, and William Shatner. The above title should not suggest that Henry Winkler wants to go on Dancing with the Stars, cause that’s not at all true. However, if you watch the second YouTube video I have in this piece, you’ll see why I said that. Or maybe you already know.

Rick Springfield - Working Class Dog

Rick Springfield sang two songs on the show. The first of which was his legendary 80’s hit Jessie’s Girl. It’s on the album Working Class Dog. During his interview he said that he does not remember the name of the girl the song is about. Technically, the song should have been Gary’s Girl. That’s catchy, huh? That didn’t sound right to him - thankfully.

The thing is, the girl the song is about might not even know it’s about her. Can you imagine having a huge hit song written about you and either never knowing, or knowing but no one ever believing you? (Do you guys believe me when I say Ryan Adams wrote a song about me? I didn’t think so.)

You know what else? Rick Springfield looks good. Can I call him hot? Cause, yea, he’s hot.

You can watch him perform Jessie’s Girl from today’s show via YouTube:

Henry Winkler and William Shatner were both incredibly charismatic and charming. Not enough good things can be said about them.

Winkler has been a co-author of several children’s books. The books are based on the trials he had growing up with dyslexia - although he didn’t get diagnosed with it until much later in life. (Like so many others, he experienced the problems but didn’t get the help he needed. He had to take Geometry three times in a row. I feel that pain - I suck with math.) The books look really cute, and have adorable titles: Continued

Let’s Chat About Nielsen Ratings prt 2.

Now that we’ve talked about what Nielsen Ratings are, and what they’ve been in the past years, let’s talk about the present. The number one show last week had approximately 24 million viewers, and the number ten slot had 18 million viewers. Not too shabby. As you will see, the American public right now seems to have a high interest in dancing, Christmas-themed programs, crime shows, and naturally, a certain brilliant and miserable Doctor.

According to nielsenmedia.com, the top broadcasted TV programs from the week of November 26th, 2007 were:
