Remember When Our Friends Lived on a Creek?

A long time ago, we used to be friends* with a bunch of angsty teens that lived on a creek. Remember those days? Yeah. Those were some pretty great days.

Dawson\'s Creek season one

Today my Dawson’s Creek season 6 box set arrived from the library (yea, buddy - I’m cheap). The sixth season is the last season. And I think most fans will agree that seasons five and six are pretty lackluster (read: mostly a suckfest). It always feels like, ‘Really? Where’s the Creek magic? Why does Jack Osbourne have a cameo? Why can’t Andie McPhee come back?’ I don’t think I can actually handle watching the series finale again. I watched it at first (all those years ago), with a couple of friends. So I held it together in that first viewing, no tears. Maybe just a little bit of mist. But that’s all. Honest!

But… when I watched it by myself…oh noooo. SO MANY TEARS. Because, oh God…Jen! Also, the line Dawson’s delivers about, ‘I guess this threesome has become a foursome’ always held such perfect self-aware irony (for the characters and the show, itself) that I find myself Continued

Why Some Teens Shouldn’t go to College

To clear things up right away, if you read this entire piece you’ll see that I’m not actually advocating people not get a higher education, unless they’re fictional. Now, I have a note of importance to make! James Lafferty (Nathan Scott on One Tree Hill) actually looks attractive with longer hair. I don’t like him with shorter hair, it makes his face look so square. Square faces = not that great. I’ll take the time to point out that I watched the season finale of One Tree Hill, mostly just because it was on and I didn’t want to move away from my fan when it was hitting my bare legs just so, cause hey - it’s suddenly hot! The finale wasn’t horrible. But I do not understand how they’re dealing with Peyton. Pathetic much?

One Tree Hill, fierce posing 101

The idea of her throwing water balloons from a roof does sound therapeutic, but there’s a point where you become a crazy ex-girlfriend and I think she’s hit it. She’s gone past the normal point of leaving a million messages, by painting ‘I love you’ a million times on a basketball court. I may not have great psyche into the male mind, but I do know that this is where some TV shows romanticize things way too much. That’s why Sex and the City is more relatable. Guys (or people, actually, in general) are more often jackasses who break-up with you on a post-it note. I’m not bitter or jaded by humanity, but I know better than to expect that kind of treatment. I see people making catchy bumper stickers about how Fairy Tales and Disney movies ruined life for them by having them expect too much. But will no one look back in twenty years and say the same of some of these shows?

Though I am not a huge fan of One Tree Hill (OTH) - I haven’t heard a bunch of fans say they’ve disliked any particular season. If I’m wrong, correct me. The thing that OTH is doing right, that so many shows have done wrong - is Continued

They’re Baaaack! Our Favorite Shows from The WB

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

It’s just like looking at an old yearbook, isn’t it? I mean, if you went to high school with vampires, werewolves, and bitchy cheerleaders. Hey, you know what? Some of us probably did.

So, The Warner Bros. Television Group is dong something that we can all be pretty happy about (werewolves included). They’re going to be putting up the website, TheWB.com. The site is going to be, “a premium, ad-supported, video-on-demand, interactive and personalized network” according to their press release. The site is still in beta mode - complete with a ‘clever’ graphic that says ‘We’re Back’ with The WB logo. I don’t see that frog anywhere, though. Remember that frog? Oh, come ON. You have to remember the frog.

There will be original programming streamed on the site, but there will also be some of our favorite TV shows. This includes: Gilmore Girls, Friends, One Tree Hill, Veronica Mars, Everwood, Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Roswell.

Maybe we should lobby for Felicity, Popular and Grosse Point to be added. That last show hardly got a fair chance, and it was so damn fun! Our winner of the DVD contest didn’t cite an old WB show as one of her favorites, but she might like them anyway. And who is that winner, you ask? Maybe I won’t tell you! Maybe I’ll make you wonder and wonder and…oh, but I have a massage scheduled in ten minutes (this is a total lie, do you really think I’m that fabulous?*) so I’ll tell you that it was Patty F. from Boston, Massachusetts! She’s won Enchanted on DVD. Patty, please e-mail Emad@Sofachip dot com (.com) with your address!

Okay, I can’t stop thinking about the frog. Michigan J. Frog! Remember the ‘Watch the Frog’ commercials? Here’s one with Milo Ventimiglia and Jamie Kennedy (who was great at Randy Meeks in Scream, but most everything else he’s done has been lame - such a shame).

*Hey, I actually AM that fabulous, I just don’t have a trained personal masseuse. Yet.

Welcome, guys and dolls, to the first installment of Sofachip Fanvid Awards! Sofachip.com Fanvid Appreciation Award - FadingSpark for Speeding Cars

I don’t know if I have the words to tell you how much of a fan I am of FadingSpark. I don’t know her (unless I say I know a vidder, assume I don’t know them - I’m not out to play biased favorites), although I’ve e-mailed her once and she was very, very nice and helpful in answering some of my questions since I am a newbie (!) to having a YouTube account and I wanted to know some stuff before I started these awards. She really likes the character of Brooke from One Tree Hill - and though I’ve always told myself I don’t like the show, after seeing some of the One Tree Hill videos, Brooke looked like such a fun character that I’ve started watching some episodes. See!? IT’S HE POWER OF FANVIDS AT WORK! Aaaanyways. I love the song choice for this multi-char Heroes video. The editing keeps the pace…dare I say perfectly? With tons of clips, emotional WOOPAW hitting you with some of them, it’s hard not to watch this video over and over again. Which, hey - I did. :D

Sofachip.com Fanvid Appreciation Award - KillerPandaJr for Keeping it Together

Am I supposed to get ACTUAL chills watching fanvids? Well, I did. This video is about our favorite sociopath - Elle Bishop from Heroes! Elle is the reason I decided to watch Heroes this season, as she’s played by the super-amazing-omg Kristin Bell. But now I stay at Heroes because 1.) I love it, 2.) Kristin is awesome, 3.) Milo, Milo, Milo. …MILO (Milo Ventimiglia - P.S. If you like him, check back here for a very fun Milo post very soon). Anyway, I’ve never gone totally batshit crazy, but if I did I think I’d see the world much like this video is colored - with splotches of red (ANGER, rawwr!) and high contrasts of black and white everywhere. I love the way the video opens with the quote, and the voiceover. The video has a cool fragmented way of presenting some scenes, much like Elle’s mind probably sometimes shows her the world. And, let’s address the song. It feels like it captures Elle’s personality perfectly. But just how long can a girl pretend to be sane?

Sofachip.com Fanvid Appreciation Award - EllesSacrifice for How a Heart Breaks

I will neither confirm nor deny having bounced around while watching/listening to this video. I have a weakness for Rob Thomas’ voice. But that alone can’t do it. This is another Elle video, shipping Elle/Peter. Turn up the speakers for this. Tons of running-around action. Peter (Milo) is shirtless and I think I cheered. Some clips of Kristin from Veronica Mars are used, but they work within the story the video is telling in a way that doesn’t seem odd, or distract you and make you think ‘hey, that isn’t Elle!’ (It bugs me when the clips from another work are obviously jammed into a video.)

Watch!:

Because rules make my hair frizzy - there are no specific categories, no deadlines, just pure fandom appreciation! (It’s as close to world peace as I can come to creating.)

If you’d like to suggest that I look at a video (it can be yours, or someone else’s) you can leave the link in a comment here. I encourage you to say what you like about the video - even if you made it.

Here’s to the Show that Made Us All Want to Live on a Creek, Especially if it Came with a Dawson (or Pacey)

Dawson\'s Creek

On Monday Buzz Sugar started a poll to see what the most popular teenage drama of all time is, according to fans. As of right now Beverly Hills 90210 is winning the race. Then comes Buffy the Vampire Slayer and My-So Called Life. I voted for Buffy, that’s just how I roll.

Dawson’s Creek is a contender, and I’m glad. That was back before Katie Holmes was abducted by Tom Cruise. The show was and is amazing. What I remember hearing a lot back when the show was new was how ‘they talk funny’ - because they used large words. Personally, I loved it - and I learned words from watching! Persnickety, anyone? I can remember watching the pilot, loving the new world. I can also remember watching the season finale - crying, but happy. (The show had run its’ course, Joey ended up with Pacey, and though Jen had a sad ending - we got to see Michelle Williams prove her acting chops in a major way.)

Gossip Girl is also a contender, and this isn’t right. The show hasn’t even had a full season yet - how can people know it’s the best teenage show of all time? What if all of the other seasons suck? Personally I think the ‘new shine’ of the show is blinding people to the fact that it doesn’t hold up next to other teen shows we’ve had on our screens.

Surprisingly, One Tree Hill isn’t in this list.

Watch the results unfold here.
