In honor of Memorial Day, it’s time to play a game. Try to guess what movie I’m talking about while I describe four of the actors/actresses that were in the movie. Okay? Ready, steady, go!
1. Currently I have a TV show on FX. I married someone I met on a movie set. I was almost one of the Desperate Housewives. I’ve been in a movie with Jim Carrey and in another with Adam Sandler. I was on a popular NBC sitcom that ended in 2004. …Who am I?
(This segue is going to rock.)
2. In 2004 I got a job playing a doctor on TV. Leonardo DiCaprio’s onscreen lover with red hair went blonde (not Kate Winslet - the other one) and short to be mod with me. One of my costars plays a Christian man who has an Australian accent …Who am I? Continued

Despite the fact that I lost interest in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles three episodes in, it’s been renewed for a second season. The show probably isn’t even bad, I just didn’t have the motivation to watch it, commercials and all. (No, I don’t have any fancy TiVo/DVR schtuffs. Alas!) I think this is a show I may get the DVDs of sometime (I’m sure they’ll come out) and sit down to watch when I can really get into it all. It was hard to watch the show when I’d never seen any of the movies. You wanna know what movies I’m (re) watching lately? You’ve Got Mail*, Sabrina, I Am Legend, Desperately Seeking Susan and His Girl Friday.
Anyway, Lena Headey and Summer Glau were at the Fox TV upfronts. They looked interesting.
Lena, I’m not a huge fan of your haircut because it makes your hair seem limp, just hanging there - emphasizing your square face. So I kind of wish you’d do something else with it. Now, your uh…pantsuit, looks fine when I look at it and scroll down slowly - it would have been a cute sundress - the blue hue is lovely, and the moddish white flowers are pretty. However, I don’t even know what to begin calling the bunched, elastic-cuffed pant things. Designer clown-inspired pants?
Aside: I’m not a fan of tattoos, but you make them seem elegant. Neat.

Summer, you look like a sun-drenched flower. I suspect people somewhere are commenting on your toes (larger picture below the first). I hope they take into consideration all of the ballet training and dancing you did - and realize flaws make people more beautiful and unique. I’m glad you refuse to hide them. I love the strappy sandals. Continued

I swear I’m not lazy, it’s just that Vanity Fair summarizes it best when they say: “Since 1992, (Vanity Fair’s) Vanities section has opened with a full-page portrait of a promising young star. In September 2006, we tweaked the format: the Vanities opener now features an up-and-coming actress in a 50s-style pin-up shot.”
For April 2008 the girl is Summer Glau. I really like the concept, and the picture is gorgeous in this way that makes you wish you didn’t mind wearing clear plastic raincoats. But you have to realize that on your own the look might be lacking, almost old-ladyish. Or if you’re a guy, it might look supremely odd (depending on your strut). One thing is clear, Summer looks very different to me in this picture.

Of course, I’ve seen her mostly as the disheveled River in Firefly (Firefly - The Complete Series) and in the movie Serenity (Serenity Collector’s Edition). Now we’ve been seeing her on Fox as Cameron on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The later role requires her to look a lot more polished than our dear River, but even so, this pin-up picture looks so different in the face. I do wish she looked a bit more recognizable in the image, but I still like it.
By the by - those enviable sublime legs? Those are thanks to years of being a dancer. In fact, she’s been dancing since she was 12. Her focus was in ballet, but she can also tango and flamenco dance. Needless to say, pick her to be your partner in a dance competition. If she was ever on Dancing with the Stars, she’d win. But her career will hopefully never come to that.

River Tam was a troubled girl. Although Summer is beautiful, they never played up her looks (aside from the natural beauty that broke through) as that wasn’t well-suited to her character at that time. You can see an example of this in the picture on the right. (It’s a screencap so it’s not the best quality ever, forgive me?)
In September 2007 the Vanities girl was Alexa Davalos. Alexa has a connection to Summer because they both worked on a Joss Whedon show. In fact, Summer was in an episode of Angel (Angel - Seasons 1-5 30-Disc DVD Set), and Alexa was in several episodes. But no, they were never in the same episode. She looks radiantly stunning in her picture. (A picture you can see after the jump!)

I’ve recently finished watching tonight’s episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles called The Turk. I had initially thought it might be a TV gem after watching the first episode, but now I’m now ready to give a new statement. And that would be that I’m
no longer how sure I am of the show’s appeal.
I really wanted to like it, and you know I did if you read my first post about the show. I’m a fan of Summer Glau, and she’s one of the three main characters. (That’s why I tuned in, in the first place.) She plays Cameron, a terminator from the future that is sent to help protect John Connor. Given the name of the show, you might expect to find a feature on the character of Sarah Connor, or the actress who portrays her. But even if I hadn’t previously been a fan of Summer Glau, I am very certain she would still be my favorite player on this show. When the best character on your show isn’t the main character, I’m not sure how well that bodes for you. I also have
Glau delivers Cameron’s lines in a methodically detached way which suits the charactor very well. However, given that this is almost exactly how Glau had to play her character of River Tam on Firefly, it seems almost like a cheap imitation. But maybe that’s because I will always find River Tam more interesting than most other TV characters.
(For anyone who has been afraid to click to the jumps because the site ’s main widget was a bit of resource hog, we’ve done away with that evil creature! So go on, jump, jump!) Continued

Okay, time to level - I’ve never really seen a Terminator movie. I think maybe I saw part of one, once. But I fell asleep watching it (which tells you just how good I thought it was). But Summer Glau (Angel, Firefly, The Unit) is in the new show: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and to me that made it worth watching tonight.
For anyone who is like me, and knows next to nothing about all of this, let me share my knowledge. Sarah Connor is a character from the first two Terminator movies - which of course I had to Google to confirm. In the movies she was played by Linda Hamilton. On the show she is played by Lena Headey. Though it has no significance, I think it’s neat that their first and last initials are the same.
One thing I understand and admire are people who become fully invested into a show or a movie franchise to a devoted degree. The reason this show came about was because of love - and… money probably helped, too. But, again, it was love. James Middleton, consulting producer on the show, realized how much he missed the character of Sarah Connor. By then, the last Terminator movie had come out. And they’d scripted Sarah as dead. But love defies that kind of restriction.
So, now we get to know what could have happened to Sarah. The show focuses on Sarah and her son, John Connor (played by Thomas Dekker), as they realize there’s no safe haven for them. The writer of the pilot, and the executive director of the show, is Josh Friedman. That’s not a name I know, but maybe it’ll be one I come to remember. Not only has he mapped out the entire plot for the first season, but he has specific ideas for where he wants to go for the next three seasons. Continued
